Such a shame to lose such a chance on her best surface. The points difference might be fairly trivial, but with a few days rest and a good draw she could've troubled anyone in round one. Still, she lost it fair and square; the last few weeks have been great progress for her, and I'd far rather see steady progress up the rankings as she gradually improves her fitness and game than an unsustainable sudden rise based on a single win. If she can't win games like these, she hasn't earned such a rise in rankings yet - but she'll surely get there soon enough.
she'll be distraught. she wasted a massive chance here. was all over the Manasieva serve throughout the match, had countless oppertunities to break and didn't take any of them.
I'm sure she wanted it more than anything, and fought for every point, but sometimes you can want things too much and it makes you tight and nervous.
I had this as the easiest match on paper of the 3, but its a big hurdle to qualify. And she completely collapsed.
Very disappointing. Its not the points that matter, its only another 10, its the belief that would of come from it.
sorry naomi lost but I am sure she will improve her ranking inside top 200 by end of year, she is still one of the most promising British girls so good luck to her
Naomi definitely could have won the match today and had chances in pretty much every service game. She played a poor game to get broken at 6-5 in the 1st set, although she had missed numerous chances before that. The Russian girl was just too consistent in the end, kept the ball deep and didn't make many errors, without being spectacular. She played quite a good game to break Cav in teh 2nd set, and the last few games became a bit of a formality, With Naomi unable to deal with the consistency and making too many errors. Having said that Naomi hit some great shots to set up the break points, and I'm shure she'll be very disappointed she didn't take one of the chances she created. At the end of the day it was a case of not playing the big points well enough.
