Boys: Roehampton ITF - Grade 1 (Week 25)

Six of the 8 wildcards have been announced already for this

Direct Entry

Alastair Barnes
(David Thomson / Ahmed El Menshawy may well eventually become direct entrants)

Wildcards

1. Oliver Golding
2. Liam Broady
3. James Marsalek
4. Richard Gabb
5. Jack Carpenter
6. Ashley Hewitt
7. TBC
8. TBC

Looks a pretty good selection to me. Amusingly the LTA say: "The final two wild cards for the boys will be selected after the pay-offs next week" so financial jiggery-pokery isn't just the preserve of politicians biggrin

Golding, Marselek, Broady...good to see LTA making better judgement with their junior wildcards than their senior ones biggrin

some decent wins there, shame our best 2 players won't be in the main draw.

Would be good to see a young guy have a big tournament like Dan Cox had a few years ago.

Am I being too harsh in saying it looks like we have a lack of talent coming up behind the 1990 generation. We barely have anyone inside the top 100 juniors for boys and that doesn't look like changing anytime soon. Surely this is where Draper should be judged after 5 or so years in charge now. Where are all the inner city kids that we supposed to be attracted to playing the game.

I'm not trying to be personal towards Golding but when you see his website it seems as though we have the same over pampered middle class kids coming into the game as before, I really hope he proves me wrong and one day wins Wimbledon though

Believe me, Monfils, Tsonga, Gasquet, Simon, Mathieu, Gicquel, Santoro, Chardy, Clement, etc, (just to look at the top French players) are not from "working class" backgrounds.

I think it's got a lot to do with the fact that team sports hace so much higher a profile than individual sports in the UK, which is not the case to quite such an extreme extent in other countries. It's worst of all in schools, which tend to pretent that individual sports don't even exist until kids are about 16.

I realise that being able to be an effective member of a team is an important life skill, but so is being able to take complete responsibility for yourself as you have to in tennis.

I'm not saying that only working class people make good sportsmen and women, but a diverse talent pool would certainly help. I dont know about the list of French players you mentioned however I do know that Gicquel was virtually living in a battered second hand car before he broke into the top 100, travelling across Europe on what ever money he could scrape together
