RE: Week 23 - WTA International 220k - Birmingham (Grass)

In all my excitment I forgot to mention Broady's weaknesses, she's not a world beater just yet!! Doesn't move particulary well especially if the ball, especially from a return, is directed straight at her she doesn't get out of the way quick enough. Also exposed bu down the line forehands onto her backhand - just copudn't cope. Of course she was erratic a bit at times but I suppose she played to her strengths by being agressive which in turn led to errors. Forehand was nowhere near her backhand but that isn't that much of a slight! Also not agressive enough on the midcourt balls she allowed the Russain to pass her a few times with shots she really should of put away.

It's going to be tough for Naomi to win this match now as you'd expect Kudryavtseva's experience to tell in the re-start tomorrow but whatever happens it has been a great experience for Naomi to show her that she can push a top player and the confidence she can take from this should help her in Wimbledon qualifying.

Just a shame she couldn't take one of the match points, but the good thing is that she didn't fold at the start of the 3rd set so appeared to have recovered from it.

Wolf...what did you think of Naomi's volley's today as when I saw her at Surbiton last year she was awful at the net and couldn't control a volley which probably cost her the win and would need to have been improved for her to be a major threat on a grass court?

Can't remember her hitting a volley all match. Which does say a lot for her confidence in that area I suppose.

EDIT: Actually I do remember one and it was netted, wasn't easy but wasn't the hardest either.

Thanks for the reports Wolf. From what I have seen of Jos she also has a super serve, but struggles with movement and getting down to low volleys. Seems to go with the territory of being a 6ft plus female player.

Yeah, I see so many tough but winnable matches if the girls play well. I hope we can at least get two 2r winners today. And also Naomi B.

Probably confirms that her volleys are still a bit weak then.

Given the rest of her game, if she could find a way to improve them then it would be a great help as it would help her kill off the points quicker and could be the thing she needs to turn her into a much better player than she already is.

ouch.

hard one to take - she'll be gutted. sounds like she got tight on the match points (understandable) but this is her first exposure to this level, and she acquitted herself very, very well.

Hopefully tis not a flash in the pan and if she gets another chance like this she knows she can't just sit back
