Feel a bit sorry for Katie and Georgie though - they probably don't stand much chance (though given how up and down Bally's been, you never know), and it would've been nice to test the girls against better-ranked foreign players. But for sheer security of British participation it is good news I suppose. Will be fascinated to see how Mel (I assume, though Katie's superior fitness may come into play?) measures up to Jie...
Urgh horrible draw! Zheng and Tamarine both had great runs at Wimb last year and Anastasia Payvl. is really tough too! Nice first round for Naomi IMO, she should take that.
Who knows, lets hope for some upsets :) Could be a big ranking hit for Mel though :(
Dj, I much prefer Katie personality-wise (from what I've read and heard of both), and for the sheer effort she seems to have put into things. But Mel has the superior record on grass and has previously taken out big names, so it'd probably be best if she won this one; Katie definitely deserves the top 100 more than Mel at the minute though for me. I'm sure she'll make it at some point this year, whereas Mel is going to really struggle if this grass season bombs; from the photos she also still has weight to lose which frankly suggests less dedication to the sport than Katie. But we shouldn't pit them against each other really - let's hope they both do well in the next few weeks. Just a question - won't Zheng be the highest-ranked opponent Mel's faced, or now I think about it, wasn't Schiavone number 14 when they played?
Qualies definitely now going to be indoors tomorrow if it rains - and also at Billesley apparently. Bit worried that this will mean our girls losing some of their edge now that they're off the grass...

Hmm, I disagree about the Mel comment, JB. Everyone has different bodies and metabolisms, its obvious that Mel is built bigger than many of the others. And anyway this training block shes had is a good start, yes she could lose some more but from what i've read from her, it seems like shes dedicated to losing it now.
And no, remember Mel played Bartoli twice this year, plus I think Schiavone was ranked 11 anyway.

Jade will now play the 17th seed Abigail Spears (USA). Bizarrely Abigail's space in the draw has been filled by BYE, so it looks as if no-one signed in as an alternate.
Katie usually beats Mel, having won 6 of their last 7 meetings. However Mel's only victory in that sequence was on grass - and on this surface Mel has the better track record.
"Misa heeft haar eerste ronde in de kwalificaties van Birmingham met 3-6 7-6(2) 6-2 gewonnen van Jocelyn Rae, die 20 aces sloeg. Er werd indoor gespeeld."
So Jos averaged considerably more than an ace per game in a match which was played indoors at Billesley, but lost narrowly for the second time in a week.
There is at least one British winner today - from Naomi B's website:
" Naomi won 7-6 (5), 6-3 against Meng Yuen of China currently ranked 187 in the world.Rain forced play indoors with both players comfortable on the fast surface. The 1st set was a real scrap but Naomi's serve proved the difference in the 2nd. She now plays Abigail Spears (USA) who beat Jade Curtis. "
Gutted for Jade. Hopefully it wasn't the indoors-ness that made the difference. 20 aces from Joss against Krajicek sounds amazing though! And good stuff, if kind of expected, from Naomi B.
