RE: Week 22 - Womens ITF ($50K) - Nottingham

3 in the quarters is not bad, i hope bally wins the brit battle and mel-wickmayer should be a close match.

Based on the points needed for each place last week, that's three Brits in the top 110 - Anne, Katie and Elena.

Steven, sure I'm missing the point here, but can you explain why Mel's only gaining the 3 points so far for these two weeks - hasn't she made 23 and lost 10? And hasn't Katie made 60 and lost 30? Is it because the points for the French have increased since last year or am I just very confused...thanks!

According to TBEs thread, bally is 113.

TBE's calculation is more accurate - mine was just based on the number of points needed for each ranking position last year, as I said. I'm quite surprised the more accurate version has her lower, I must admit.

Thanks, jamatthews, for explaining my figures for Katie and Mel. You can see what I'm counting (or not) for each player at http://www.britishtennis.net/stats/ptdf.htm?n=1 - it usually only gets updated once a week, but because some players have two new sets of points to go on and some have two new sets coming off next Monday (both of which may or may not be couinting scores), I've been updating the best 16 lists as I go along in order to make sure my figures are accurate.

Oh thanks! I've actually never seen that before, sorry I just thought you'd picked a figure out of your head. Thats really interesting to see the points breakdown.

Good luck Mel and Naomi tomorrow! Sorry Bally. :p

Ah I see, thanks Steven/James for explaining that - forgot about mandatories etc.

Hard to be too happy about Naomi beating Katie so convincingly, as I imagine Katie's 'mental problems' are particularly acute vs Brits, but still great to see 3 Brits out of 8 in the quarters. As for NC v Bally, I'd rather Bally got the points to be honest, as Naomi will have plenty of opportunity to pick them up in Wimbledon qualies.

Hmm. How far do you guys think Naomi would have to go to be considered for a MDWC as the "Exceptional circumstance"?

I think beating Bally would be enough tbh. If she shows them her past record, where she pushed Hingis/ Venus pretty well for 2/1 sets and then beats 2 of the MDWC recipients then I dont see how they can say no. Especially since she has got herself into shape now and has had a good year.

Plus she is young, which will work in her favour. I want her to get the WC now tbh, she could do some damage if she brings her top form, but I want Bally to win this and Break the top 100 by Wimb.

It's got nothing to do with "mental problems". Naomi is simply a far better grass courter.

As for the WC situation, I think I'd prefer qualifying. I'm pretty confident she'd raise her game for it, and the points would come in very useful for reaching US Open qualifying which is an important target IMO. The last thing I want is for her to get another tough draw, and show that's she can compete but go away with nothing once again.

That wasn't what I meant, I was just expressing sympathy with Katie for the defeat - but I used the wrong term of course, apologies. I'd much rather Naomi went into qualies and developed some consistency to bag the 60 points - it's stupid to try and build a rise up the rankings on one victory. And what if she draws the top seed, and ends up with nothing? Far too risky at this stage in her comeback. 60 points is huge in ITF terms, and she can't afford to miss out on that on a surface she enjoys. A MD WC might provide a 'quick fix' if she gets the win, but if she can't consistently compete with top 200 girls on her best surface, and win 3 in a row, what's the point? Obviously there's Eastbourne to consider, but she's unlikely to recoup the same amount of points there as in qualies.

"At 5-2 up I got edgy on my serve and we lost eight points in a row. On the ninth point I we were both at the net and I fell down, retrieved a volley, stood back up again, hit three more volleys and we won the point. It was the point that got things going in our direction again. It was nice to get another match under our belts," said Sarah.

Katie would of been fine.

I'm surprised anyone thought Katie would even come close on this surface, Naomi is more than a class above her on it.

She should have too much for Bally as well, depends on her fitness.

Only when I'm in a really big hurry LOL winkbiggrin

You can get to the breakdowns from the http://www.britishtennis.net/stats.html - I update the player by player ones every week (every day during complicated weeks like this one) and there's also a week by week 'points off' list that gets set up at the start of each year and then left as it is.

Re. Wimbledon WCs - I agree that for someone at Naomi's level, there a lot to be said for rising going through qualifying when you pick up a shedload of points (40) just for winning one qualifying match. It's a bit different for the men, where the points for winning slam qualifying matches are much smaller.

I think Cav is now up to GB no. 6 and will be up 50 places over the RG fortnight and back in the top 300. smile.gif

Pretty good day for the girls. Highlight was definitely Mel. She played exceptionally well. Her groundstrokes and serves were amazing. There was one game in the second set where she served 3 aces in a row and nearly made it 4 but narrowly missed the line. Ditty was totally outclassed.

Watched some of Elena's match but had to go and watch another match as it was so frustrating and boring. She would play a great point that would put her in a good position in the game, then follow it up with very poor errors, wasting so many leads and opportunities. Don't see Bally beating Naomi with this not great form, she really needs to step it up, hadn't looked particularly impressive in either of the first two rounds, even though she has managed to scrape through which I suppose is what counts though.

Jade played a really good match against Wickmayer. Lots of very close games, long deuces and tough rallies, she fought for everything and I love that about her. Wickmayer was always going to be tough and her groundstrokes were so powerful and precise, Jade was being moved from one side to the other. She coped very well under pressure including games where she had to save break points.

Jocelyn again was very impressive. That serve is a HUGE weapon, definitely one of the best in professional womens tennis. Both Krajicek and Rae have massive serves so it wasn't surprising that there was only one break in the whole match. Lots of serving and volleying from Rae, which was generally so well done, she is very good at the net. Her game is perfectly suited to grass so i'm hoping she's done enough to get another wildcard opportunity, don't know where for, I guess Birmingham qualies, because with a decent draw she could cause serious problems for players with that serve.

Naomi vs Katie was not nearly as entertaining as I had anticipated. Having watched Naomi's two prior matches I knew she was in great form but I thought that Katie would have done a lot better considering her results this year. Katie wasn't helped by a lot of unfair calls, which she never questioned but had I been in her position I definitely wouldn't have been so calm and accepting of some of the calls. However credit to Naomi, she was again striking the ball beautifully, setting herself up well and finishing off many points with well measured winners. Katie was struggling with some of the balls Naomi hit because they were hit very powerfully into the corners and close to the lines. Was heartbreaking watching Katie lose, she obviously really wanted to do well on home soil and nothing seemed to work for her like it has been for the first 5 months of 2009. Hope she picks herself up again for the next few weeks.

Fantastic to see Sarah come through the doubles. She always looked like she was enjoying being out there and played some great points, including the one Wolf mentioned above. I could imagine her playing with haynes again in the future, they play well together, hopefully they can win the title.

As picks for the title i'd definitely go with either Wickmayer or South. Mel really impressed today. However i haven't seen Voegele play yet so I don't know whether she is a candidate for the title. Will add some more videos tonight.
