Wimbledon Juniors 2009 Preview

The initial acceptance lists are out, and can be viewed here:

http://www.itftennis.com/shared/medialibrary/pdf/original/IO_41689_original.PDF

There are no British direct entries in the Boys

QD

14 Alastair Barnes
20 David Thomson
22 Ahmed El Menshawy

will all probably be given main draw WCs

Girls MD

1  Laura Robson
14 Heather Watson
30 Hannah James
36 Stephanie Cornish

QD

None

I am surprised to see that Laura has entered, as most champions do not defend their title in Juniors

Most grand slam champions are a lot older though, so are moving on from juniors.

If Laura hadn't have been injured and missed 3/4 months i'm not sure if she would have played again in juniors but her progress has been hampered.

The only junior i know to have defended their junior title was Hingis at RG when she won it for a second time at the age of 13.

I'm pretty sure they lady with the long surname I am currently watching being crushed by Safina defended her AO title once and tried to do it for a third time but failed.

I think she won it in 2007 and Aranxta Rus won that in 2008 i think. Not 100% sure though

No 1991 boys will be given WC for any event over the period of Roehampton and Wimbledon, that is the word coming from the NTC. Shame really as I can think of 2 rather good fast court players who could push on to US Open.

Wolf is quite right that Pavlyuchenkova won it in 2006, defended in 2007 and tried but failed in 2008 (Arantxa Rus winning as Mervatron says). The fact she had tried to defend it twice had completely passed me by. Laura risks some flak from certain quarters of the press though if she doesn't win Wimbledon again - but I suppose she will have to get use to that in the future anyway.

Interesting - I didn't expect anyone outside top 100 to be awarded one, but any of the top 3 could still make US Open Juniors. Nevertheless leaving them in the Wimbledon Qualies frees up more WCs to split between the top 1992s and 1993s. Also if any do qualify it should help their chances in the main draw.  In terms of which 1992s and 1993s pick up main draw WCs I imagine some will be decided by an internal play-off.
