RE: Weeks 21-22 - French Open Main Draw

And the plot thickens:  both Flatman & OEM have really taken up the cudgels now! clap.gif The Flatman article even has a predictable response from a Portugoose "reader"! wink

Good for them. The fact that the shriek continues until the opponent is hitting the ball is enough proof for me that it is deliberate cheating, especially if you add the fact that she only shrieks when ranking points are at stake.

The real culprit though is Bolletieri - he's responsible for nearly all the shriekers, as if churning out mind-numbingly boring players (Maria partially excepted) wasn't bad enough.

Ugh, that justification of it strikes me as an utterly vile, spoilt little kid talking - too much too soon, perhaps? No matter how good she gets, I think I'll struggle to have any admiration for someone who behaves like that...

Loads of women players shriek very loudly on court, so why the moral outrage over a 16-year old child? How loud is too loud? How long is too long?

And here's a poser on gamesmanship for you. Everyone loves Rafa, the absolute role model for chivalry and sportsmanship.

Yet he grunts loudly every time he hits the ball, and the grunts seem to get louder and longer when things get a bit tight.

And the lengthy service routine, including the Sharapova glare at the opponent, could be regarded by the cynical as blatant gamesmanship.

Where there are rules which depend on value judgments by the umpire (ie - interference with the opponent, and unsportmanslike conduct), then as sure as eggs is eggs, human beings will push them to their extremes.

So chill out, people ...

(Of course, you don't really get this sort of thing in the men's game, because the "locker-room" won't allow it. The women's game is (I believe) much more insular, and the players don't generally mix and make friends with their peers to anywhere near the same extent).

i think part of the problem Ratty is, aside from the fact that here shrieks are beyond ridiculous, she does other stuff as well...like the unnecessary fist pumping and c'monning on every meaningless point, the fact she doesn't grunt in practice

That's a new one on me! Off-court, maybe, but on court - hardly!

He never loses his rag, never argues with the umpire, always reverses poor linecalls against his opponent, loses graciously, etc. So I would certainly regard him as very sportsmanlike.

Just been watching Azarenka beat Suarez Navarro. Her shrieks seem to be just as loud and long as Larcher de Brito's. Shall we have a hate campaign against her too?

Probably not, but that makes our opinions more objective, doesn't it?!

I'm pretty impressed by Hannah James, putting up a good fight to go down 7-5 6-4 against Timea Babos - and she can serve aces! Converting 2 of 12 BPs ain't too tidy though. I'd confess I'd assumed from her results that Hannah was just another Brit notching up the points in obscure tournaments, but given Babos' win at Edinburgh and final at Bournemouth, this suggests she may have something - apologies for my assumptions, Hannah! Anyone know when she's planning her assault on the senior circuit?

No, not sure about that! Steph Cornish just broke Ficheux in her first game, could be a nice sign there :D

5-2 up now. But both players below 40% on the first serve. I'm hoping the stats are wrong though, because if not, there's only been one winner so far...an ace. Doesn't sound like the most edifying of matches...

Shes there to win tho, not entertain. I dont care if its the most disgusting errorfest ever witnessed on a tennis court, it would still be a nice win :p

Azarenka 6-1 Safina ... where did that come from?! (Sod 6-1 Kolya is just as crazy too)
