Well I went a week without any Jo comments .However it was reported on the Daily Mail online that Jo pulled out of Ostrava because of Corona virus fears. She did not fancy travelling whilst corona virus cases were spiking. It should be noted that Marketa Vondrosova has tested positive for Corona virus and pulled out of Ostrava.

Saw a tweet earlier (can't find it now) that Jo had decided to end her season because of the risks of traveling at the moment.

Russell fuller confirms the reasons, cant say I see any issue with this. It's a one off event and theres only 1 more left in a months time, anyway!

In pulling out of Ostrava Jo might have been aware of one of the articles in the Telegraph today. "Czech health service buckles under strain of worst virus rate." Their health service is in danger of collapse.

Czech Rep has, ironically, the worst case rate in Europe (twice UK's) and a death rate 3 times UK's. In tennis playing nation terms, Germany stands out as very low. Shame WTA could not have arranged events there.

I'm struggling to get recent (per 100k) case rates for Australia, they just seem to report raw case numbers or cumulative rates but Victoria stands out as the worst state by some margin. Lets hope it being their summer and that keeps covid down, making play possible in 2021.

I feel most of all, Jo just needs more competitive, injury free, matches.

ourworldindata.org shows Czech Rep has the worst case rate for countries with over 1m population. Australia is one of the best.

Yes, it's very frustrating. I've been searching Amazon for replays of Jo's matches. All I could find was Begu and Azarenka and nothing before covid. Similar story on Eurosport: Stephens (2019 RG), Jabeur and Gauf. So just 1 of Jo's 2020 victories.

Amazon seem to have oodles of individual ATP match replays but just their main coverage on the final 2 days for WTA tournaments. My WTA TV subscription was axed because Amazon has exclusive UK rights but I'm convinced Amazon is not as comprehensive.

Eurosport have some tasty matches (eg Jo v Muguruza 2019 AO) but they are "unavailable in our region"?!!

Yeah, I was searching for a match on Amazon the other day but couldn't find it, so perhaps their archive isn't as good as it could be, however, I much prefer Amazon to WTA TV generally. It actually works out a bit cheaper, you get all the other benefits of prime (inc ATP and PL matches), can watch it on the TV. I can't even remember if WTA even had an app, but you couldn't really pause or rewind. If you did pause it, when you pressed play, it went back to live, so it was pretty pointless. I just got WTA TV at the back end of 2019 for a couple of months for the Asian events which started at like 3/4/5am over here, and some of the matches I was still waiting for them to upload well into the evening, whereas Amazon at least initially get them up almost straight after they have finished.

That was Mondays Dogs posting. There had also been postings on twitter on Sunday of Gizmo. I've read on tennis forum that if players are going to Australia then they'll have travel there between 14th and 17th December in order to fulfil quarantine regulations. On that basis any press conference will be earlier than the one last year which was 19th December. That was the one which revealed the seriousness of her knee problem.

I didn't have the problems with WTA TV you experienced. I watched on a (Win10) laptop from the Chrome browser. I could Chromecast to my TV or watch via HDMI cable. WTA had a live stream for each court which you could scroll through via a slider control. Match replays and highlights appeared after the live stream closed but not as promptly as Amazon (Amazon haven't always been so prompt). I recall on WTA the replays disappeared c. 3 days after the event, however, they did have an extensive archive section with FMR and highlights. WTA video was a bit jerky though. I got it to supplement BT's mostly single channel coverage and minimal on demand replays.

When WTA TV blocked my account I was assured in writing that Amazon would provide the same coverage but Amazon's archives don't seem to be as comprehensive. Perhaps the same is now true on WTA but I can't even get into the listings to check. I notice that Amazon often take the WTA commentary, which has less UK bias (which I like). I agree, though, Amazon is generally very good value... for now?

My main point though, is there must be thousands of archive match videos out there and thousands of fans wanting to view them. Where do they all go? Who owns the copyright and why aren't they more available? Some crop up on YouTube but why not more? I would pay a reasonable subscription for the option.

Last I read, AO were still trying to get exemptions as per US and RG "bubbles" and considering moving all the run up events to Melbourne. In March, F1 are planning a Grand Prix in Melbourne with limited spectators, which has been confirmed by the organisers but is not yet on the official calendar. F1 is not feasible without exemptions for the drivers and teams.
Jo, of course, has an Australian passport so don't know what difference that makes? Judging by her social media, she usually visits her sister and nephews in Sydney, whilst down there but that would be outside of the bubble so would incur a quarantine at some point.
I monitor all sorts of news stories, tennis and otherwise (including Jo's) on the NewsNow website (it lists a good selection of global, UK and specialist media). It's horribly heavy with ads though... makes my phone red hot, so I don't linger!
