RE: Week 20 - Womens Roland Garros Qualifying

that's rather crap really.

*5-3 first set, *4-1 second and completely collapsed.

Martic gets his first win since Indian Wells.

Its a poor result, but on her worst surface and a long time out, at least she is competitive and back fit and healthy.

Onto the grass now - let's see what she can do.

Bit unfair that she had to play a man biggrin

Anyway at least it shows she has got back quickly into the same form she was showing before her injury

At least she'll have plenty of opportunities to play at this level on the grass

Good to see Katie coming through strongly in the end; really hope she can make at least another win, as I can't see Bally winning twice here, and would be a big boost for top-100 aspirations. To be fair, she hasn't choked much this year so far, and anyone can lose a few games on the trot. Shame for Georgie, but she does seem always to be 'in' matches, and to keep pushing; let's hope she can realise her potential on the grass.

If Bally can come through this it will be Vongsouthi in next round who won 6-2 6-4

Now normally that would be a comforting scoreline, but given the other Brit performances so far today...

Fantastic! Actually didn't realise it was Vongsouthi next, you'd hope Bally should take that one. Tbh, 2 Brit women in FQR would be a good achievement - and points-wise anything more now is a bonus - does anyone know the last time a GB girl came through qualies here?

For Bally, Shvedova in FQR would be tough - she's pushed Pennetta to 3 on clay (her favourite surface) this year, beat Stosur and Vaidisova aswell in Rome, and also forced Azarenka to a third at Indian Wells. However, she lost heavily to Rezai at Tourhout (0 and 2), who Katie gave a good match in 3, so you never know.

I think Katie will be OK against Fujiwara; Anne beat Rus fairly easily in Fed Cup, but she's had excellent clay results, including beating Fujiwara and Georgie's friend Martic in straights. Schruff won the $50k in Latina on clay (beating Brianti & Petkovic), and has also beaten Martic in 3 this year. Both would be very tough for Katie on clay, but you never know - though I think she'll have to have her head screwed on a bit better and cut down those doubles.

I'll have to get back to you on that one! When I was checking back to see how long it had been since as many GB women had played in a slam without needing WCs as at this year's AO, I went back to 1992 and the only British women who have appeared in the RG main draw at all since then (all as DAs) were:

1992 RG DA/R1 Monique Javer
1992 RG DA/R2 Sara Gomer
1992 RG DA/R3 Jo Durie

1993 RG DA/R1 Clare Wood

1994 RG DA/R2 Clare Wood

1999 RG DA/R1 Sam Smith

2009 RG DA/R? Anne Keothavong
2009 RG DA/R? Melanie South

Edit: Until the ITF activity stats start behaving again, the best I can do is Clare Wood in 1988, but although she went through qualifying, she only got into the main draw via a lucky loser slot.
