Girls: 50th Trofeo Bonfiglio, Italy - Grade A (Week 20)

Ok, not started a thread before so I hope this works out right...

Laura Robson makes her much-anticipated comeback here in preparation for Junior Roland Garros alongside Heather Watson. Both girls are on the opposite side of the draw with the top (Robson's half) looking the weakest with (2) Babos, (5) Elena Bogdan, (3) Tomljanovic and (13) Gavrilova along with unseeded banana-skins Rogowska, Trevisan, Orlik and Keys all in Heather's half.

1st Round:
(1) Robson (GBR) v Ejdesgaard (DEN)
(7) Watson (GBR) v (Q) Orsi (ITA)

Both matches look straightforward. Edjesgaard is outside the top 100 in Juniors and 900 in Seniors while Orsi is outside the 1000 in Juniors and not ranked at all in Seniors.

It is Alex. Laura reached the quarters here last year in the singles and the final in the doubles so will be hoping to rack up the points at top seed this week.

Absolutely fine - saved me some work! It's a strong field, so Ejdesgaard is about as good as Laura could have hoped for, but first match back after over 3 months out is bound to be a test. Ejdesgaard lost to Hannah James in a Grade A event last autumn - unfortunately Hannah is a late withdrawal here, having pulled out of the Edinburgh late on as well, so hope she is going to be fine for Roland Garros.

Looks a tough competition as you say Aeneas the bottom half of the draw looks loaded. Babos was in great form in the 10ks in Bournemouth & Edinburgh recently

And Gavrilova is a awesome talent.

Surprised Lauras not playing doubles with Orlik, can only hope that the top 2 seeds in the doubles make the final.

Good luck to both Laura & Heather

I'm a little surprised too as Anna and Laura appeared to make a good pairing whenever they teamed up and instead Orlik and partner might be Heather's second round opponents. It might have something to do with Kerkhove having the most doubles points of all the girls in the draw and is also defending doubles champion here...

For clarification:
1R: (1) Babos/Watson v BYE
1R: (2) Robson/Kerkhove v BYE

2R: (1) Babos/Watson v Kolar/Leykina or Linette/Orlik
2R: (2) Robson/Kerkhove v Curovic/Skamlova or Boev/Pillot

1st Round (L64):

(1) Laura Robson (GBR) d. Malou Ejdesgaard (DEN) 2-6 6-4 6-1

R2

(1) Laura Robson (GBR) v (WC) Julia Mayr (ITA)

A tough return for Laura, and she will need to step up next round against someone who reached a 25K QF 2 weeks ago. Heather wasn't on today's schedule

not a disaster for a Laura but just an indication of where she is at the moment. However if she continues the improvement through sets 1-3 she'll be just fine.

How does she do that - can you win 6 to -2?

On a more serious note, I looked at Mayr's propfile, and last week's 25k QF was a career best for her. She only has two more ranking points than Laura after 22 entries - if she wasn't just coming back from injury, I think we'd already be looking at the next opponent.

Laura beat Mayr 6-3 7-6. A good result considering her performance in the first round.

R1: (7) Heather Watson (GBR) d. (Q) Carolina Orsi (ITA) 6-3, 6-0
R2: (7) Heather Watson (GBR) v Mallory Burdette (USA)

Comfortable win as expected for Heather who now goes on to face Burdette. The American lost to both Heather and Steph Cornish (twice) late last year on hard courts.

R2: (1) Laura Robson (GBR) d. (WC) Julia Mayr (ITA) 6-3, 7-6
R3: (1) Laura Robson (GBR) v (14) Y Buchina (RUS) or T Curovic (SRB)

Great win for Laura who as stated above was playing a girl ranked higher than her in seniors and especially seeing as she looked very rusty yesterday. (If expected) Buchina is half decent but got battered by Heather 6-1, 6-2 at Eddie Herr in December.

Great win for Laura a definite improvement from yesterday - well done Heather a solid performance. I saw Buchina play doubles with Heather at the AO
Heathers groundstroke's were far superior and for a lot of the match was redundant as their Russian opponents directed a lot of the play towards Buchina.

The OOP for today has been announced this morning and it appears the first round of doubles was indeed completed as planned, they just took longer to post the scores. Long and short of it is Watson will have to play her second round singles match as well as the second round in the doubles today with less than two hours likely to be between each match and Laura doesn't have a day off either. She's scheduled on for doubles fourth on court 8.

2R: (1) Babos/Watson v Linette/Orlik
2R: (2) Robson/Kerkhove v Curovic/Skamlova
