Did I say qualifying in Spain and Italy was weak this week? Not as weak as it is here! smile

Our most in-form player (Wardy) and most out of form player (Slabba) could be the top two seeds here and Sean Thornley is also a main draw DA.

He might have just meant he was flying back to London and then getting a connecting flight to Kuwait, but I wouldn't be surprised if he does give it a miss now that he's made the top 250 with no points to come off while it still matters from a Wimby WC point of view - it's pretty clear that he entered the Kuwait Futures in case he needed a last dash for points, probably not even dreaming that he'd get enough by the end of his N American clay campaign.

Then again, why not go for even more points while he's on a roll - he'd be the favourite to win KUW F1 by a mile.

Presumably the cut-off for the 250 point will be before his points from qualifying for Queens come off, as I'd guess that when they do, he'll drop out of the top 250 again - but then if he wins a round at Nottingham or wins tonight then it won't matter.

They're going to have to make the cut-off before the Queen's points come off in order for players to know if they have to play in pre-qualifying or sign in for qualifying, so he should be fine.

In any case, he may stay in the top 250 after those 10 points come off even if he hasn't scored any more points in the meantime because as http://www.britishtennis.net/stats/20092008.htm?n=1 shows, the points needed for a top 200 place have been going down by about 20 per month thanks to the points available in this year's Challengers not being anywhere near as much as the doubled points from last year that are coming off and a similar thing must be happening to the top 250 threshold.

In the doubles, David Rice & Sean Thornley (combined ranking 2223!) have a tough task:   they take on the top seeds, Jiri Krkoska & Pierrick Ysern (CZE/FRA) (757), in the first round, while in the bottom half of the draw, Slabba & Alexei Filenkov (RUS) (881) are the second seeds & take on a couple of local WCs, Hamad Abbas Jahani & Ziad Sultan (UAE/KUW) (UNR), in the first round.

*  Re Slabba in the singles, he appears to have a reasonable draw (he could face his doubles partner in the second round if they both make it that far!), so maybe this tournament is an opportunity for him to start getting a run of wins uner his belt & regaining a bit of confidence.  I hope so anyway. please.gif

          As expected Rice & Thornley lost 1&2 but Slabba & Filenkov won 2&3 and next take on the Indian pair, Shokeen & Singh, who beat the higher ranked KUW/SWE pair.

         Only singles matches being played tomorrow so here's hoping that Rice & Slabba can get wins. Slabba should but...

Slabba really should be looking at a decent run here as there's no-one for the first couple of rounds that should get close to beating him.

Hopefully this event can kick-start his season, as he's steadily going to be defending points for a long time now.
