Stevens thread deleted but this is his post...

QR2: (q1) Alex Ward WR 835 v Marcos Esparcia Omedas (ESP) UNR or Ariez Elyaas Deen Heshaam (MAS) UNR

There are no other ranked players in the Wardinator's section.

Alex's points total will halve on Monday week when his points for reaching the Final in Balaguer last year come off, so this was probably his last chance to be a main draw DA for a while and he only missed out by one place. Hopefully he'll get in anyway - it's remarkable how weak the qualifying draws are in both Spain and Italy this week.

This also means that by a strange coincidence, James Ward's first Challenger Final has come exactly 52 weeks after Alex Ward's first Futures Final! evileye

Ward beat SABATE-BRETOS in the Spain F8 qualy draw at the end of Feb in 3 sets.

James Ward and Goodall have both won against him with his only recent win over a Brit was a 2 sets win over Pierre Clad last July.

The 22 yr old spaniard is not on a good run ATM with only 1 QF appearance this year.

Alex in straights for me pray.gif

Good win for Alex. smile.gif

Fornell-Mestres (CH=236) is a bit of a Brit-basher unfortunately. I can't check up on qualifying results since the ITF have removed them all as mentioned on another thread, but he has a 6-0 record against Brits since 2002, having beaten Mat Lowe, Alan Mackin (1 & 1!), Morgan Phillips (0 & 4), Slabba (3-0 ret.), Dr No (4 & 3) and Alex himself (6-3 3-0 ret. in Sabadell a couple of months ago) without dropping a set.

Still, mid-late May is when Alex peaks, if last year is anything to go by!

Alex lost unfort 6-2 2-6 6-2. Looks a bit of a topsy turvy one! Hoping he keeps this consistency going to get back up the rankings after next weeks fall!
