Awesome results for Mors and Coxy there. I thought that this was a great opportunity to get a 60 60 win - good to see that he didn't disappoint.
Seb de Chaunac is totally different from the rest of the field, though, since he's a Challenger regular. Why he's playing here with a Challenger in France is beyond me... Anyway, Cox needs to be at his best to win this.
After a brilliant day yesterday, it's all going badly wrong today: the Irish second seeds in the doubles, McGee & O'Brien, saw off Arldige & Leahy by 3 & 2 in the SF & then proceeded to despatch Nick Cavaday & Barry King by 4 & 4 in the final!
I thought I'd pop in today to watch maybe 20 minutes but ended up staying for nearly 2 hours. Gutted for Morgan as that match was of a very high quality and could have gone either way so I am gobsmacked to see a 6-1 scoreline in the final set.
My intention was to watch a bit of Cox and Smethurst as I had missed him the day before but when I turned up the Cox match was in it's last game and there was a point during that game which Cox felt summed up the match. He had completely dominated the rally but the Frenchman somehow retrieved an approach shot from Cox which Cox decided to leave expecting it to go long but it landed on the baseline that would have led to 0-30 on the Frenchman's serve. Cox muttered something to himself along the lines of nothing has gone right today and both players exchanged wry smiles between themselves . Three points later it was all over with Cox slamming his raquet to the ground to sum up his day. Then I thought I'd catch the remainder of the Smethurst match but that had finished simultaneously. I asked one of the line judges the score and they said 6-3 6-1 so I said Daniel lost ( believing he was the underdog) no she said Smethurst had won comfortably.
Bains v Guez Bains was outclassed in this match and having watched him yesterday I thought this might be the case. However he showed a different side of his personality today at 1-4 down in the first set he delved into his box of tricks (non playing) and for a while it worked. He started using the weirdest sounding grunt I have ever heard (aagh yaa..) and fist pumping after every point won. He broke back and the score became 3-4 but alas he couldn't sustain it and tamely lost out 3-6 1-6 .Maniel summed up his performance by saying to himself you can't afford to miss any balls against these guys.Straight after Maniel was seen relaying his post match thoughts on his mobile just a few yards away from courtside.
Phillips v Olaso Phillips played a cracking match dominating his match at the outset and at 3-1 and 15-40 with 2 break points looked to be coasting to the first set but his level dropped and the spaniard upped his game to win the next 3 games to lead 4-3 Morgan then held serve but it was at 4-5 the real drama started to unfold. Morgan was 0-40 on his own serve with the first set seemingly gone but he won the next 5 points to hold at 5-5 . Both players were really striking the ball well at this point and then again at 5-6 Morgan fought back from 0-40 down to save another 3 set points but couldn't save a seventh Olaso winning 7-5.At this stage a capitulation looked the most likely scenario in the second set. But Olaso's level dropped and Morgan's dug deep to get the break at 2-1 in the second set. Olaso responded to get 0-40 on Morgan's next service game but Morgan saved all those break points to take it out to 3-1. At this stage the spaniard had incurred a code violation for hitting a ball way out of court getting increasingly frustrated at his inability to see off his plucky opponent. The spaniard then tamely got broken again to be 2-5 down in the second when I left expecting there to be a grueling 3rd set alas it wasn't to be.

Great win for Smethurst and hopefully he can build on this week and go and have a good rest of the season.
Shame that none of the others could join him in the semi finals - Cox looks like it just wasn't his day, while maybe Morgan ran out of steam in the final set, but once again he shows that he looks good enough to be a top 500 player and just needs the luck of a few draws to get there.
