RE: Week 19 Futures - Great Britain F7 ($10K) - Newcastle

Yes, that's what I was thinking smile.gif ... unless it was really Grimolizzi out there all the time, but Phil's description has enough in it to suggest it really was Maniel. (3) Guez next for Maniel.

Maniel had an english accent as well. I spoke to one of Golding's entourage and said that there was some confusion over whether Bains had won yesterday and he seemed completely mystified.I also spoke to one of the physios who suggested that the spaniard who hewitt beat yesterday was complaining about an injury but had managed to play doubles afterwards.

They did lose the doubles quite easily, 2&1.

Whoops! My comment should have gone at the end of Phil's post if it is to make any sense at all. Must have pressed the wrong quote.redface.gif

What a great win for Smethurst, good to see Morgan win too. That's probably at least as good as we could have hoped for from today. smile.gif

In the usual format + QFs:

L16: Josh Milton WR 704 lost to (1) Sebastian de Chaunac (FRA) WR 203 by 4 & 1 cry
L16: Dan Cox WR 643 beat (WC) Ben Davis UNR by 0 & 0 smilecry
L16: (Q) Oliver Golding UNR lost to (4) Guillermo Olaso (ESP) WR 308 by 2-6 6-2 6-0 cry
L16: (Q) Morgan Phillips WR 1271 beat Benoit Paire (FRA) WR 611 by 4 & 4 biggrin
L16: Burnham Arlidge WR 840 lost to (3) David Guez (FRA) WR 303 by 1 & 0 cry
L16: (Q) Maniel Bains WR 1071 beat James McGee (IRL) WR 541 by 6-2 7-6(5) biggrin
L16: (Q) Daniel Smethurst WR 1101 beat (7) Frédéric Jeanclaude (FRA) WR 371 by 7-5 7-6(5) biggrin
L16: (WC) Ashley Hewitt UNR lost to (Q) Barry King (IRL) WR 1112 by 0 & 2 cry

QF: Dan Cox WR 643 v (1) Sebastian de Chaunac (FRA) WR 203
QF: (Q) Morgan Phillips WR 1271 v (4) Guillermo Olaso (ESP) WR 308
QF: (Q) Maniel Bains WR 1071 v (3) David Guez (FRA) WR 303
QF: (Q) Daniel Smethurst WR 1101 v (Q) Barry King (IRL) WR 1112

A pity all four Brits ended up in different QFs really, but hopefully one of them will find a way to keep this good week going!

4 Brits through to the Quarter Finals is probably more than the majority of us were expecting so good news there

I wonder if the reason for the better results this week is that the courts they are using only have a light covering of clay and are playing nearly like a hardcourt

Great wins for Morgan and Smethurst (who finally seems to have got going this season), while Cox completed the win we expected from him.

Hopefully one of the four can make the semi finals here - Cox looks to be playing really well this week, while if Golding could get a set off Olaso, then surely Morgan must have a chance as less, while Smethurst is ranked higher than King, so it's not unreasonable to suggest he could win - probably Bains is the only one who doesn't really stand a chance.

Would you say that they play more like hard courts than clay courts?

I suppose the weather might be putting off some of the fair weathered foreigners smile

I believe Golding is a promising young player but not in Laura Robson's class. Currently I would give him genuine top 100 potential but no more (I'd love to be proved wrong)
There is huge potential for him to improve physicially so we'll see.
