GreatUncleBulgaria on AM.com (Who might be along with a full report once the Muzza match is over) confirms Ashley's win and says:
"Ashley played fantastic, very intelligent construction of the points at one point I was a bit worried he would lose focus Poch-Gradin disagreed with a line call got in-to a right strop called for the tournament referee argued with him walked over to Ashleys side of the court got a warning from the umpire all the time this was going on I was praying Ashley wouldn't lose focus and he didn't"
Very encouraging!

Great to see Golding get the win and to be on the rankings at just 15 is a great achievement.
Great win for Morgan as well, and hopefully he can have a good week here and pick up plenty of points.
Milton gets a nice win as well, but a shame for Fitzy to have lost, while another terrible result for Slabba - whatever it was he did at the start of the year just hasn't worked at all.
I'm fairly sure that Oliver is the first 15-year-old Brit to join the rankings since Dan Cox in late 2005, when he was about 4-5 months younger than the 15 y 7m than Oliver is now.
Even Muzza didn't join the rankings until he was 16 y 4 m, though he joined the rankings by winning a Future and had had far more (unrewarded in points terms) wins in Challenger qualifying before that. Greg Rusedski got on the ranking list at 15 y 10 m but Tim Henman didn't get on the ranking list until he had just turned 18.
Even Federer didn't manage to join the rankings until he was just over 16, though Rafa was 15 y 3 m when he first got ranked, i.e. a few months younger than Oliver but a month older than Dan Cox.
Of course, when you get your first point can be hugely dependent on how lucky you are with draws or, in the 'old' days, when you got your first Challenger main draw WC - perhaps looking at when under 17s first crack the top 1000 would be a more valid comparison.
Judging by his website though http://www.olivergolding.co.uk/ he's already well on the way to being the first GB player ever to be as annoying as Serena Williams ... sorry, Drew!

well as Andy hasn't started yet I thought I would pop in here and post this
Quote:
Well, Dan Cox was the latest Brit in the firing line today and if the BBC have got the score the right way round, he didn't just break the streak with a close-fought win, he took the Frenchman apart 1 & 0! That would be a stunning result!
Don't think anyone told Dan his opponent was a brit basher before he started he, Dan just looked in a class of his own I would have thought he was the higher ranked player
Marcus Willis never looked like he believed he could win, think he has a groin strain he had a medical time out and was stretching a lot between point so maybe that was it, he just looked dejected most of the time
don't know what happened to Ben Davis's opponent I had just made my way over to that court after seeing Willis lose saw a few points was impressed with Ben then change of ends at 7-5 4-2 to Ben umpire announces Ben's won saw the Italian walk off court chatting on his mobile didn't seem hurt ?
Illingworth v Arlidge Arlidge won but I preferred Illingworth's style of play almost uses the raquet like a fencing rapier also did Arlidge put Illingworth off shouting at his raquet and the ball whenever he missed
Joshua Milton (Gbr) bt Andrew Fitzpatrick (Gbr) 6-1 6-3 fitzpatrick got a bit unhappy re line calls maybe that's what did for him today
now a question how come the foreign players slide much better than ours (Illingworth can slide)

Thanks for the reports.
re: sliding - foreign players are brought up on the clay, and so, have to learn to slide from an early age to give them a chance, while the majority of Brits are brought up on indoor hard, where you cannot slide. Hence, when they play on the clay, they've not learnt the technique to slide, and so cannot do it, or cannot do it so well in matches.
Illingworth does look like he's had some sort of clay-court training, judging by the way he plays, so that probably explains why he can slide.
Judging by his website though http://www.olivergolding.co.uk/ he's already well on the way to being the first GB player ever to be as annoying as Serena Williams ... sorry, Drew!

I wish you hadn't posted that link.....I've taken a dislike to him already
Got to say, I'm impressed with some of those results. Hope the rest can come up trumps too. My only hope is that they're not one-match wonders. Fingers crossed for the next rounds.
Btw Barnes & Golding beat the top seeds Olaso & Poch 2 & 1 in the doubles QFs too! (possibly a tank from Poch, who probably can't wait to get away, but we'll gloss over that!)
