RE: Week 19 - Challenger (Euro 64K) - Izmir, Turkey

Boggo on twice tomorrow. *eek* Singles first, second match on court 7 and then later in the afternoon he plays his doubles. Let's keep the faith & hope it's not going to be an early exit for him in either.

Erm, Count, if you check the DS on the ATP site (here), I think you'll find that Sirianni beat Klein by 4 & 1! wink

Just to add to the R1 scores, I see Ivana Sergeyeva (Q) made up for her compatriot's early exit by beating Björn Rehnquist  by 3 & 4! disbelief

Well Sergeyev is the one most of the AM.commers thought was a girl before he coame on court to play Josh, so it's an easy mistake to make!

from nathii's site:

Sergeyev d. Goodall 63 64

I watched a few games of both sets. As I said earlier, Sergeyev is very impressive from the back of the court and he looks pretty fit, so getting into long rallies with him would make him only happy. Goodall started the match with trying to play his game, which also depends on solid groundstrokes from back of the court, and clearly Sergeyev had better strokes of the two and won majority of the long rallies.

The thing with Sergeyev is he can't hit many winners and at times his shots land short, but at defense he is really impressive and turned the rallies around many times with good defending, so he is a tough, annoying opponent to play. His mobilty on the court, stubborn personality and being smaller than some other guys is helping his quick move around the court.

Goodall didn't give up by any means; he tried to play something different with coming to net to finish quicker but failed. He had few BPs in the last game, but Sergeyev saved them to finish the match. He was delighted at the end.

'Twasn't a mistake, 'twas deliberate! wink  In fact, I thought I was being quite clever!  Couldn't believe my eyes when I saw him/her on the Beeb's DC coverage.  Male ponytails make my skin crawl... thumbsdown.gif

Unsurprisingly, a plethora of Brits in the doubles:

R1:  Aucks & Goody vs Matthias Bachinger & Karol Beck (GER/SVK)
R1:  Boggo & Delgo vs (3) Michail Elgin & Alexandre Kudryavstev (RUS/RUS)
R1:  Skups & Freddie Nielsen (DEN) vs WC Haluk Akkoyan & Ergun Zorlu (TUR/TUR)

*  Tough draw for Boggo & Delgo & Aucks & Goody, but reckon Skups & Freddie stand a chance... please.gif

Aucks & Goody now play the Russian alternates, Evgeny Kirillov & Artem Sitak, in R1.  Let's hope that signals an improvement in their chances of a QF place...

Wishful thinking on the part of the poster?  You should know better than to take one of that shower at his/her word, Count! wink  Actually, I visited MTF a short while ago & realised what must have happened when I saw Stakhovsky's name spelt with an "i" at the end, as per your post. wink

Good news from Izmir is that Josh Goodall is in as a lucky loser, replacing Rajeev Ram who has pulled out with illness.

Goodall though will have to face the 4th seed Benedikt Dorsch in round one, with Sergeyev awaiting the winner in the second round.

well that's a bit of luck for Josh, not the easiest of draws but better then flying home, and a chance to revenge if he can win

Dorsch is a tough draw but Josh has a 2-0 record against him, having beaten him 7-6(1) 6-1 in Edinburgh in 2004 and 7-6(6) 7-6(4) in R1 of US Open qualifying in 2006, the year he qualified. smile.gif

assuming the guy with the green highlighter in Izmir is correct.

funny they spell bogdanovic right, but who's Godal? well he's beaten a seed so he cant be bad biggrin.gif

boggo will should play meffert next. have to say i would have expected a more convincing scoreline vs the WC but at least it 's a win. good play by josh to take advantage of the LL and let hope can get some revenge on the girly.
