With that win (10 more points to add to the 6 she got for qualifying) and last week's points, Jade will:
- move up into the GB top 10 (up to 9th from 12th) - break into the top 400 for the first time - become the 2nd highest-ranked GB teenager behind Naomi (and now ahead of Amanda, who was higher-ranked than both of them before this) - become the first of the current GB top 25 women (ex. Konta) to record a 100+-place gain so far this year (Naomi will match that a week later if she has an ok week in Edinburgh)
She's certainly had an excellent couple of weeks
Elena's next opponent is Ksenia Lykina (RUS) WR 292. who beat Mel South in Toyota late last year having lost to Katharina Brown in Jersey a few months earlier - I'm not sure what that tells us!

Agree. Jade has been doing well in doubles and until recently it seemed she wasn't going to get that far in singles even though she's still young. Suddenly she's having a patch where the results are coming in singles and we are seeing more of the promise that has been spoken about over recent years. Maybe this is just the start of Jade making a move upwards in singles. let's hope so.
R2: BALTACHA, Elena (GBR) 1 137 beat LYKINA, Ksenia (RUS) 292 6-1 6-0 R2: CURTIS, Jade (GBR) Q 451 lost to NAKAMURA, Aiko (JPN) 4 175 6-3 6-1
QF: BALTACHA, Elena (GBR) 1 137 v CHALOVA, Elena (RUS) 407
Jade met her match today but a storming win from Elena suggests she is coping with the courts in Japan a lot better this week. Baltacha and Chalova last met in Las Palmas in 2007, when (our) Elena won 1 & 2 and Chalova has lost to both Naomi Broady and Emily Webley-Smith already this year.

Our first (singles) semi-finalist of the week. Chang's only previous singles match against a Brit was at this tournament last year, when she lost to Mel South in 3 sets. Coincidentally, Elena would overtake Mel in the rankings by a single point if she were to bea Chang this year!

Just noticed that Chalova has reason to be cheerful - she's the first player to avoid double bakery against Elena this week! What a difference from Elena's disppointing early loss last week.
