Rome R2: Andy v Juan Monaco

Juan Monaco beat Kiefer in the opening round, having come through qualifying. Andy won their previous encounter in Miami but it was something of a struggle 4-6 6-3 6-2. In that match the difference between the players was Murray's dominance of Monaco's 2nd serve.

Monaco has a good record on clay, winning 3 titles: Buenos Aires, Poertschach, Kitzbuhel and reaching 4 other finals. This season he has already beaten Tommy Robredo on clay but had a surprising loss to Beck in Monte-Carlo. In Barcelona last week he lost to Fernando Gonzalez in the R16, having beaten Safin.

Expect Monaco to get a high percentage of first serves in play. But Murray's first serve has more penetration and the faster courts in Rome should give him the chance to win points with unreturned serves. In contrast Monaco will probably be hoping to turn the match into a battle of the forehands.

Nasty banana-skin for the first match then. Clay is definitely Monaco's best surface.

Doesn't look good for much play today and apparently tomorrow isn't going to be too much better, so it looks like Rome is going to be behind on schedule.

Murray will hope to get this match done as soon as he can, but as it's a second round match, it's likely to be pushed back down the schedule as it's more important to get the first round matches done.

Even so, this is going to be a very tough match for Murray as Monaco on his day is a top 10 clay court player and before his injury was on the verge of making the top 15, and even though he hasn't quite recovered from that, he's still a very good player.

Murray's going to need to play pretty well to win this - he dropped a set to Monaco on a hard court earlier this year and Monaco's much better on the clay.

I think he will have enough to come through this match, but I think he may need three sets to do so - it's not the kind of match he'd have wanted to start the week.

They did - but it's raining again furious.gif

Come to sunny Italy. Yeah, right. I don't know why people complain about Wimbledon weather, it seems to me a lot of tournaments have weather disruption.
