Wardy needs to go deep in a Futures sometime soon, as he didn't he get to the final of a Futures about this time last year?

Yes he did, those 16 points (out of his total of 29) are coming off on 25 May.

L32: Alex Ward WR 842 v (Q) Enric Guaita-Pais (ESP) WR 1495 - probably on Tuesday

The winner is likely to play top 500 player Bastian Knittel (GER), the no. 3 seed.

Score was 5 & 3. Will play Vicente Fibla (UNR) after he beat the third seed 4 & 2.

L16: Alex Ward WR 842 v (Q) Pepe Vicente Fibla (ESP) UNR

Alex's next opponent, who got a WC into qualifying, may be unranked but he somehow managed to beat no. 3 seed Knittel 4 & 2 today, after beating no. 1 Q seed Marse-Vidri 4 & 0 and no. 9 Q seed Mirtea 1 & 3 in qualifying!

On top of that, he's 33 and has never even played qualifying for a Future before. He has honed his skills on the Spanish national circuit (eg http://www.lasprovincias.es/valencia/20090315/deportes/mas-deporte/pepe-vicente-fibla-adjudica-20090315.html, http://www.3x4.info/esports/3-general/253-pepe-vicente-fibla-se-impone-a-alberto-cornelio-en-la-final-del-xxxiii-open-ciutat-de-benicarlo) that Robert Dee spends most of his time on.

Now that's what I call a late bloomer!

How curious. As much as I'd like to say otherwise, that might be quite tough to call! Go Alex!

L16: Alex Ward WR 842 lost to (Q) Pepe Vicente Fibla (ESP) UNR by 1 & 3 bleh

It's going to be interesting to see how the unranked 33-year-old playing in his first ever Future goes on to do this week ...

On paper that's fairly disappointing but given that set of results, the loss isn't quite so surprising. The scoreline is more so. Thought it'd be closer. Ah well.

This week is slowly dwindling away...
