QF: (Q) Marcus Willis WR 945 lost to Grégoire Burquier WR 571 by 7-6(2) 6-4 QF: (Q) Dan Cox WR 703 beat Murad Inoyatov (UZB) WR 487 by 4-6 6-3 6-0
That should get Dan into the top 660 and up to GB no. 11 ahead of the Skupster, after which there's a huge gap up to Colin Fleming at GB no. 10.
SF: (Q) Dan Cox WR 703 v Martin Pedersen (DEN) WR 619
Nobody has taken more than 4 games off Pedersen in a set so far this week and the Dane was ranked 344 less than a year ago. He beat Dan Smethurst 6 & 3 in Jersey last week and he beat Skupski and Goodall in successive rounds at Redbridge in Nov 2007 and the only blemish (or good point, from our point of view) in his 11-1 record v Brits was a tight loss to Chris Eaton in Oct 2006.

Shame for Evans to get injured, especially when he was in a run of good form - just have to hope the injury isn't too serious and that when he does come back, he can pick up where he left off and continue to charge up the rankings.
Good weeks so far for Willis and Cox though, and even though Willis lost in the quarter finals, it's a sign that he has finally got going this year.
Cox seems to be in some really good form at the moment and the way he seems to be playing, he could be able to beat Pedersen in the semi finals (and maybe should), and then give it his best against Ilhan, who'll surely make the finals - at least he looks to have got going this season and is starting to move up the rankings.
Great to see Coxy continuing to fill his undoubted potential. He definately should beat Pedersen tomorrow who is much more comfortable on a doubles court.
Cox has been saying in interviews that his results in Bath and Jersey gave him a huge amount of confidence. Good to see him really making deep inroads into a futures, from the match I saw in Bath he's got some really big weapons now and is playing at top 300 level.
Pedersen has some huge shots but he blows very hot and cold and has a short fuse when things go wrong getting down on himself very quickly. He's a quick starter and will come out all guns blazing but I'd think the slower surface might suit Dan more and hopefully he can reel him in.
Cheers freerider, let's hope he keeps going this week and then makes use of that SE to keep on pushing after Evo. Great to see these guys start to move up the rankings.
Just to add to Shedman and Steven's analysis of Pedersen:
WR 619 (CH 344 in May last year) Has started off 2009 in patchy form, posting only 2 wins at Futures level over #800 Krkoska and Smethurst and a dead rubber victory over #1797 Henri Kontinen in a Davis Cup match. Competed well against #283 Nielsen and #280 Groth after losing in straights to Niemenen in the Davis Cup, his only poor loss coming in his first match of the year: to #739 Gorcic 6-3, 7-6 in Croatia.
The big dip in his ranking came from his inability to step up from Futures to Challengers after May 2008 where he failed to qualify for 3 Challengers, lost in the 1st round of another and won just 1 match in 3 Futures events when he tried to drop down again to boost confidence. This compared to his 2007 form in the same part of the season where he went 12-2 on the Futures circuit and reached the final of Dublin Challenger meant he dropped 200 odd places.
Nevertheless in the last 3 months of 2008 he steadily moved back up the rankings, with another Futures title and final appearance alongside moderate Challenger level progress.
'Hot n cold' as Shedman describes him seems a perfectly apt description of the Dane, all things considered he hasn't started 2009 all that badly, he's just been unlucky with the draws. This week he has faced and beaten 3 qualifiers all in straight sets, hopefully it will be 4th time unlucky and Cox can maintain his progress.
How hard is it to look at the draw sheet on the ATP?!
"In the second round, Cox met number three seed Pierre Metenier of France and again passed the test with flying colours. The first two sets had been shared with Metenier taking the first 5-7 and Cox taking the second 6-1. Cox was leading the third set 3-1 when his opponent withdrew from the competition with a shoulder injury."
That was Dan's first round match where he beat Paval...He beat Metenier 6-3,7-5!
"Standing in the way of Cox reaching his first final at this level is world number 619 Pedersen who defeated Laurent Rochette of France in a close quarter-final yesterday."
How is beating someone for the loss of just 4 games close?
I appreciate the coverage of Dan's matches by a local newspaper is great, but it's baffling how poorly the facts are presented!
That's just par for the course for local papers though, you just don't realise it unless you're reading a story about something you know the full facts about.
Whenever we get a story in a local paper, I always cross my fingers that they've been lazy and copied out the press release verbatim, because that's just about the only way for a local paper story not to be riddled with obvious errors and contradictions ... though of course even when they copy out press releases, they're more than capable of mis-copying them.
In the end though, better that they're covering Dan's successes with some factual errors than not covering them at all.

Thing is Pederson has only faced qualifiers in every round so far.
