RE: F1 2009 Season.

Schumi puts the comeback on hold :( a shame i was really looking forward to seeing him in a car again, esp having been a massive fan since 1992.
i wonder if he might look to race later in the season if massa is still out and his neck is healed?

they've named 38 year old test driver Luca Badoer as replacement. I remember him vaguely, he used to race for Minardi or Arrows or something

Congratulations to Jenson Button, World Champion   clap.gif

It was good to see him put on a good show today, battling through from 14th on the grid ( after the monsoon qualifying ) to 5th with quite a lot of overtaking  ( watch it Jenson, this overtaking stuff in Fomula One might catch on smile )

He had a phenomenal start to the season, 6 wins out of 7.

Then midway through the season the Red Bulls started to look really dangerous but didn't manage to take that form through.

Also in the second half of the season,  Jenson's teammate Rubens Barichello, generally outqualified him and indeed more often than not raced better.

However, noone ever did catch the hare  smile

I'm very happy for him.

I have always followed Jenson's career myself and he has had some bad luck and also pretty dodgy cars to drive, most particularly last year's Honda.  At times he has seemed to have an uncanny ability to get himself to the wrong team at the wrong time.

It is most certainly far from all down to the car, but a decent car is certainly needed for a driver to take the ultimate prize.  As FD said earlier, generally the best drivers will generate towards the best cars.  Then who ultimately wins is a combination of the driver and the car / team behind him.  But in my view, only if you are among the very top few drivers will you ultimately be successful.

Even though Honda / ultimately Brawn were a team in transition ( to put it mildly !! ) from last year, they were one team who did a lot of early development for the new rules this year ( such was the pig of a car Ross Brawn told them to give up on on last year ! ),  got a flyer and the lack of testing allowed this year probably added to the time it took others to begin to catch up.

At least I can say I was in Melbourne in March to witness the first ever Brawn appearance and 1 - 2 there by Jenson and Rubens. The Ross Brawn takeover was such a last minute thing that although I wanted to show support, they had nothing on sale at the track with the Brawn logo or anything, though quite a lot of cut price Honda stuff which I resisted.

Next year could be very interesting ( well for those like me who like their F1  wink.gif ).  I would be tempted now to put some money on Alonso.  He may well, all things being equal, be the best driver out there, and over the last two years has got as much as I think anyone would out of the Renault.  Next year he will be at Ferrari and I'd be a bit concerned that Ferrari basically stopped looking for enhancements to this year's car some time ago and moved towards next year's car. They may well, like Brawn this time, get a bit of a head start.

This 'Champion' proves that this 'sport' is a nonsense....his car was so much better than the others for the first 6 'races'...then the others caught up with their cars and it levelled out...if he wins SPOTY then I will make my goal in life to get F1 banned under the trade description act.

The driver with the best car wins. Simple. Give them all the same car then I might watch it.

Really? He doesn't come over that way to me. Do you have some inside info? If so, give!  biggrin

Part of the fascination with Formula One for me is the competition between the teams to produce the best car they can, and the occasional different routes they go down.

I absolutely appreciate that some folk would prefer a totally level playing field and no inter car competion but that is a totally different beast from the one we have, and I personally like the one we have.

I too wouldn't make Jenson my SPOTY for whatever that matters. I do like what I see and hear from him, and as I say have followed his career and am very happy for him.  But he in my view he didn't handle the second half of the season tremendously well and as I said earlier was generally outperformed laterally by his teammate.

While I still absolutely maintain that you have to be among the very top drivers to win the championship  ( although in a particular year perhaps not THE best ), I also have some sympathy about the point of perhaps overrewarding someone say partly reliant on machine or animal.

But that does not stop me enjoying my motor racing just as so many folk enjoy equestrian sports.  There is to me no logic in say suggesting that these sports cannot be enjoyed because the participants do not all have equal chances.  We know what we are watching and in each of these sports I would say that many folk take the whole experience together.  But each to their own.

Hey, I personally hate basketball  ( too much scoring for me, so that each moment has less meaning, i.e. like the total opposite of football where some Americans can't get their heads round the low scoring but each moment possibly being climatic ).  But some folk are clearly very much into basketball, and good luck to them.

It would be an awful boring place if we all liked F1 or basketball wink.gif

Each to their own...

Indeed  smile    Anyway, I'll try and resist proposing getting basketball banned  wink.gif

Surprised that you haven't been posting anyway about that football team that STILL haven't conceded a goal at home all season   biggrin

Well done to Jenson, I don't really get the best car argument this year.

Vettel has clearly got a better car and has had better results. Its just he has made loads of mistakes and ended up throwing it away. Also Barra had the same car and didnt manage to compete the Jenson.

Jenson did the best with what he could. I don't think he is the best driver in the sport, but since when has F1 been about the best driver? A1GP tried to do that, but failed!

I was at Melbourne as well and I can remember the shock at Brawn getting onto the podium after all of the Ferarri and Mclaren domination of the last few years. I think this season has been a little low on overtaking but at least you never knew who was going to win each race!

I find that viewpoint surprising Alex, very surprising, because I don't see it myself, let alone that you should feel so strongly.

But to use the phrase of the thread, "each to their own"  smile
