So here's a question for all you ATP rulebook readers/rankings boffs...how will the Monte Carlo masters scores be counted? It's not one of the 8 compulsory masters so will it have to count as one of the player's "6 other" and if so, is it part of the "at least two from ATP 500" or the remaining 4 (only applicable for people who ended last year in the top 30). Or does it count as a masters score and so you can miss one of the others (can't be that or else they're not compulsory). Or does it count as a masters and you can lose your worst compulsory masters.
Any ideas anyone? Or is this another case of, lets wait and see and hope the ATP know what they're going to do because nobody else does.

Fed is out of order for this. He should playing in these events as of right and not denying some other player who needs a WC to get into an event like this. Sure it will be a better event for Fed to be here but not like this.
I have to agree with Drew there. I'm affraid I am not a big Federer fan, I starting going off him about two years ago as although his tennis was fantastic, I thought it was going to his head a bit. It is easy to be polite and friendly to the press when you are winning all the time. I do appreciate how difficult it must be for him at the moment now he's struggling more. But that flash of temper in Miami where he broke his racket showed another side to him. It wasn't just the temper, I am sure that can occasionally get to any player, but it was what he said to the press later about not having "lost it", when clearly he had for a while. I also feel he's been somewhat unkind in things he's said about other players of later as well.
He obviously thinks his number 2 spot is under threat - and he does have a stack of points to defend. Does not excuse him for not entering in the first place.
Always suspected that Federer would take a wild card here, and especially with his poor performances recently, he needs to get some ranking points or he'll end up ranked 4th if he isn't careful.
That said, I'm not so sure what kind of mental shape he is in, and therefore could end up going out in the early rounds (I think last year he was 5-1 down in the 3rd to RRH!!!)
Not sure all the criticism of Federer for taking the WC is totally fair though - I'm sure Fernando Gonzalez isn't going to get slated for taking a WC into Barcelona when he didn't bother to enter originally, in what is the same situation really... and don't forget, Murray has been the recipient of WC's when he hasn't entered events as well.
I think it is something that may happen quite frequently in the future. With such stringent new rules about withdrawing from Masters and 500 tournaments, players who are unsure whether they want to play or not will not be inclined to put their names down and then have to withdraw, if they think they will be able to get a wild card.

Would have preferred being in the opposite side of the draw to Nadal but I think there's a reasonably good chance that Andy will make it through to a semi-final contest. Probably need a competent display to get past Nalbandian or Davydenko but neither seem to be anywhere near their best at the moment. Last time Andy played Rafa on clay he did create openings but couldn't execute the final shot. Getting a set off Rafa would be a real achievement but I think a 5-7 4-6 scoreline or perhaps getting to a tiebreak is about the best he could hope for.
