Amanda Elliott was fairly comprehensively outplayed by her tall German opponent. Amanda has a great serve and this kept the scoreline from being quite one-sided as she simply couldn't live with Ostertag from the back of the court. Virtually every time they got into a rally, Ostertag would just blow Amanda away with hard flat hitting into the corners. Amanda didn't seem to be able to find any way to take the initiative from the back and was reduced to serve-volleying on both 1st and 2nd serves to stay in it. She fought pretty hard and saved a number of break points at the end of set 2 and led 5-4 in the tiebreak but couldn't quite force a decider.
Ostertag will make the quarters fairly easily today, Balducci wasn't very impressive. Elisha Gabb seemed quite nervous early on, missing a number of easy balls but they were at fairly level pegging in set 2, Balducci just had too much courtcraft
Naomi Broady looked in fine form and could easily have double bagelled Jessica Ren. Like her sister Jessica has grown a lot the past couple of years but there was a huge gulf in power. Jess had nothing to hurt Naomi with and at this level her serve needs a lot more on it, Naomi giving it the treatment.
Didn't see any of Borthwick's match but wish I had done now !
Jade Curtis made heavy weather of her match. She was 5-2 up in the first set and had 40-15 at 5-3 but allowed the big serving Liu back into it briefly. Jade had numerous chances to get the break all through set 2 but played a dodgy service game at 4-4. However from the back of the court she was easily the better player and in the decider, Liu stopped making the first serves and it ran away from her quickly. Jade has a great backhand and is really fast, very good volleyer aswell. As one of the watching LTA coaches said the big area stopping her making top 300 and higher right now is her 2nd serve which doesn't make the grade. It's there to be hit and Liu did just that a number of times as the match went on.
Tara Moore just looked very very erratic.....most people seemed quite stunned by that scoreline.
