It's interesting that in all three of the ties where Boggo, Baker and now Eaton saved us from a 5-0 drubbing, the win came in the second of the dead rubbers - hope it doesn't just mean the opposition couldn't be bothered any more!
And thanks to Drew - it's much easier to type than it is to text ... though I was tryingto work t the same time which made it more tricky!

For those who thought that having this in Glasgow was a bad idea...well you should have been here. Crowd were great and even Roger Draper was impressed and this is a potential DC Cup venue. Yes, clearly the atmosphere was hugely better than last time, all credit to the crowd.
Surely it's already an actual DC venue though?!

Chris Eaton played a robust serve and volley match against Josh Goodall's conquerer from Friday in the last rubber of the tie. Dead it may have been but the crowd and more importantly Chris was alive to it. Chris broke early on with Marchenko not helping himself at all. Chris served well and sealed the first set with 3 aces in the final game. 6-3
Marchenko was upset with himself visibly throughout the match but got it together in the second set when Eaton's first serve deserted him. Chris played the best stroke of the match...a backhand cross court winner on the run to seal a service game. However Marchenko held on and took the second set 6-5
Chris was starting to play good ground strokes and it was Marchenko that struggled to keep serve in the third. Chris had some chances to break early but had to wait until the tie breaker to show his dominance. At 6-5 serving for the match Marchenko put his forehand an inch out and the rubber was won.
The crowd had waited 3 days to celebrate a win and they did it in style. A big thanks to the Stirling University students for their noise and colour over the 3 days. Even if they got free tickets and placed right behind the GB bench for optimum effect.
Good win for Eaton and at least it saves us a little bit of embarassment to have avioided the whitewash, and hopefully he can take some confidence from that win to wherever he plays next.
Maybe Marchenko wasn't giving it his all, but once the match went to a 3rd set TB I guess he would have been trying to win, so it's still a decent win for Eaton.
I do hope he can push on a bit now - he could be a very decent player if he improved his groundstrokes a bit and could be bothered to play his best at the lower-level events too.

he either thrives on adrenaline, and in futures just doesnt care - or i have a theory that maybe the lower ranked players play serve vollyers' more regularly - so they know how to tackle them; but when he steps it up it is an unknown to the higher ranked players so he just suprises them.
