Bastl is solid - do Richard Bloomfield and he have any history? Richard's got this far before without qualifying, when was the last time he managed to pull it off?
Great win for Bloomers, and hopefully he can go one step further and qualify now, and I suppose facing Bastl in the final round is definately a better option that Istomin, but does take away the LL-tank situation that could have happened with Istomin.
Still, it looks like Bloomers is playing back to his best and hopefully can translate these wins to points in the next few weeks.
Bloomers qualified for Queens last year! Only one meeting between them which Bastl won 6-4, 7-6(3) in the Besancon Challenger a year ago.
Ah yes, that was a good week - unfortunately I was remembering Basel, Metz, US Open, Washington and of course Wimbledon afterwards when he didn't make it. (I looked them up.) Hopefully it will be a Queens week this time as Richard needs to get some good quality wins behind him to get his tennis moving forward again before it's too late.
QR1: Richard Bloomfield WR 323 beat Massimo dell'Acqua (ITA) WR 419 by 3 & 4
QR2: Richard Bloomfield WR 323 beat David Guez (FRA) WR 281 by 3 & 4
FQR: Richard Bloomfield WR 323 v George Bastl (SUI) WR 228
That's a really great win for Bloomers against a player who has won his last 9 matches against Brits (most of them in the current GB top 10 as well), and with a convincing scoreline too.
Bastl first played a Brit in qualifying for the Coventry Satellite way back in 1993 and has since amassed a tennis score against our players, leading the H2H 40-15.
Since beating Bloomers 6 & 6 in Besancon last year, Bastl has both beaten and lost to Boggo (who has a 4-3 record against him), beaten Jamie Baker in 3 sets, and beaten Chris Eaton in 3 sets.
He must have played very well to beat Istomin today, but may well be feeling the effects of a 3 hour match, especially since he is now nearly 34. Btw I wonder how he came to play for Switzerland when both his parents are Czech and he was born in the USA.

If Bastl wins, Bloomers will be only 4th in line unless Janowicz recovers from a set down to beat Huta Galung and then loses to de Chaunac or Middelkoop, in which case he'll be third in line.
The only way he will get any ranking points from this event is if he beats Bastl or gets an LL slot then wins a main draw match, so given how unlikely it is that he will get a LL place in the first place, let alone get a winnable R1 draw to go with it, the match against Bastl is by far his best chance to get something tangible out of his success here.
