FQR: Neil Pauffley WR 1524 lost to (q3) Ervin Eleskovic (SWE) WR 552 by 3 & 4
Not a bad campaign by Neil ... and he gets his reward (though still no points of course) ...
L32: Chris Eaton WR 390 v (Q) Denis Matsukevitch (RUS) WR 625 L32: (6) James Ward WR 282 v (Q) Artem Smirnov (UKR) WR 536 L32: (PR) Jonny Marray WR 455 v Stéphane Robert (FRA) WR 367 L32: (LL) Neil Pauffley WR 1524 v Karlis Lejnieks (LAT) WR 485 L32: (2) Josh Goodall WR 204 v (WC) Philip Davydenko (RUS) UNR
Unfortunately, the winners of the first two matches above play each other in R2, while it seems the Brits can't avoid Stéphane Robert even when they try to evade him by going to Germany. Still, it would be good to snap Robert's Brit-bashing streak at 10 ...
Josh has a very nice draw though, starting out against a 16-year-old whom I imagine only got the WC because of who his uncle is - the winner of his match plays a WC or LL in R2.
Philip's record so far is W 1 L 8 from 7 WCs (including 3 main tour qualifying WCs which gave rise to two double bagels and a straight sets loss to a player with one ranking point), though he did beat an unranked player in Futures qualifying last week before going down 3 & 1 to WR 893.

R16: Pauffley/Fidirko (GBR/BLR) UNR v (WC) Rivchin/Martin (GER) UNR R16: (3) Marray/Eaton WR 775 v Marchenko/Smirnov (UKR) WR 937 R16: (2) Ward/Goodall WR 605 v (WC) Eger/Lorenz (GER) WR 2643
Goodall has a gift of a draw - would be very dissapointed if he doesn't make at least quarters and in the first match really should be dealing out bakery products.
Disappointing results from today, as only Ward makes it through to the second round, while I suppose Marray's loss was expected, Eaton would have hoped to have made it through

I thought you meant Josh had lost as well for a moment! Looks like Robert has resumed normal service - give Brits inside the top 500 four games, those outside the top 500 three. Jonny's the kind of player you expect to do a bit better against people like that, though not a great opponent to meet in your first match of the year, that's for sure.
I didn't expect Chris to go out in R1 (and certainly not to get bagelled, though of course he did take a set) - I hope he just had a bad day and it doesn't mean Matsukevitch is a ringer who's going to take out Wardy too!

I guess if you look at it as non-Wimby Chris (he'd be ranked about 650 without the Wimby points) taking on WR 625 and losing in 3 sets, it becomes less of a shock, particularly when the qualifier would be used to the courts.

They won that encounter 2 & 4 & face the unranked German WCs, Leif Berger & Michael Lux, in their QF. Incidentally, Stéphane Robert didn't have it all his own way today: he & his compatriot, Ludovic Walter, the fourth seeds (WR 846) & in Goody's & Ward's half of the draw, were beaten 6-2 3-6 [8-10] by another Froggy pair, Julien Maes & Fabrice Martin (WR 1652)!
