L32: Andy Murray [4] vs Jurgen Melzer [31] - CH 28
The difficulty finally starts to increase for Andy as he plays someone ranked inside the top 50 for the first time. They played three times last year, with Andy leading the head to head 3 - 0. With the most memorable probably being the come back from two sets down at the US open.
Whilst Andy is unbeaten this year, Melzer has lost to Robredo and Serra, only managing a victory over Fish in Brisbane. To get this far here Melzer has beaten Beck in 4 sets and Nishikori in straights.
So on paper it looks easy for Andy, I think it will be a little tougher than the last couple of games but Andy will take it in straights. Probably with a tie break somewhere in there.
yes i agree make no mistake this will be a tough test and there history between the 2 im actually worried, though it should be 3 sets on paper, melzer you cant afford to drop your guard, its like the germans in austria and poland, they break your serve......
Just noticed tht Meltzer is playing mens doubles and mixed doubles too!! Playing 4 matches in 4 days in the melbourne heat may take its toll and we know andy likes to make his opponent work hard!
Started off strong with a break. then lost serve. However he kept his cool. held easily and broke for the first set. After that its been a walk in the park. He was up 5-0 in the 3rd. Got broken on what looked like a lazy game. Melzer held. Then Andy got back to work and closed it out with an ace. Overall: Amazing foot work and movement. Mind blowing shot making.
its only going to get harder from here out. But he looks extremly good. Im very confident in a slam champ!
its 5:30 in the morning (US) and i cant beleive i stayed up all night. But it was worth it
Just was a bit too easy after the first set, although it was definately helped by Melzer's total collapse after blowing 3 break points at the start of the second set and his decision to come to the net off almost anything and get passed a lot.
Murray played pretty well (only 11 UE's), although I think the way that Melzer played means the count is artificially low, but he got the job done in straight sets which is all you can ask for really.
Verdasco next will be tougher as he is playing some excellent tennis this year and will probably be the first time he is pushed in the tournament.
Well done, Andy I'm starting to expect him to win these matches now.
As soon as I saw Melzer was wearing yellow, I thought Andy was sure to win - I don't think I have ever seen a player wearing yellow beat him! Confidence faltered a little when he handed Melzer the break back again in the first set, and when he went 0-40 down serving at the start of the second, but he made a magnificent recovery to hold and then bagel the Austrian.
H2H against Verdasco is 5-0 in Andy's favour, but Verdasco has improved greatly since they last met so the next match could be tough.
