The draw is out & Jamie M & Liezel Huber are the fourth seeds. They play the Aussie wild cards, Sophie Ferguson & Chris Guccione, in the first round & I sincerely hope Jamie manages to make johnnylad eat his words on the main Oz Open doubles thread!
Six matches played "overnight" and three seeded pairs out already: both the Bondarenko sisters from the Ukraine, Kateryna, seeded eighth with Jordan Kerr (AUS) (beaten 4 & 3 by the Aussie wild cards, Jarmila Gajdosova [clearly another eastern European "gone west", so to speak!] & Sam Groth), & Alona, seeded fifth with André Sá (BRA) (beaten 6-3 4-6 [6-10] by Alizé Cornet (FRA) & Sá's doubles partner & compatriot, Marcelo Melo). The other seeds to fall were the Czechs, Kveta Peschke & Pavel Vizner (6), beaten 2 & 4 by the all-Indian pairing of Sania Mirza & Mahesh Bhupathi.
Fouth match in the Margaret Court Arena (presumably because their opponents are Aussies!) tomorrow morning our time, after another mixed, a men's double & a ladies'. I'd love to think "Little Bruv's" performance at Melbourne Park thus far will inspire something similar in "Big Bruv"...
Think Jamie needs a big performance here to try and kick start his season and also to get himself into the Davis Cup framework again.
With some of the seeds already out, and him and Huber being one of the stronger pairs in the tournament, you'd hope they'd be able to put a good run together here, as Jamie always seems to do well at Mixed Doubles
Good Result for Jamie - Hopefully will give him some confidence
That being said I would hope this plays no impact on DC selection as being honest MD is more of a 'bit of fun' which should be used for the purposes of match practice.
I'm pleased for Jamie (& Liezel). It may be a "bit of fun" but once on court the matches are contested with just as much fervour as any other, and probably mean just as much to those who compete on the doubles circuit. If it helps to build up JM's confidence, even better. Having said that, I'm leaning more towards Hutch for the only doubles spot on the DC team.
The draw has opened up a bit for them, as they're the 2nd highest ranked pair left in the tournament, although when you actually look at who they have to face, it doesn't become quite so easy.
The bookies have them as 4/6 favourites to win this match, if anyone is interested
Dechy and Ram are good doubles players, but hopefully the fact Murray and Huber have played together a lot will help them sneak through this (but I think Melzer/Cibulkova will beat them in the next round)
