RE: Week 3 - Futures F2 (15k) - Sheffield, GBR

Shem Flembo's run comes to an end, but he's been playing quite a bit recently so maybe it caught up with him. Oudsema isn't that bad either is he?

Shame for Milly & Illy nut Lacko and Robert are quality at this level, and looks like Robert is back is his scrooge Brit bashing best.

Really looks like Evans has a handle on Eaton though, especially as you'd imagine indoors being Chris's better surface.

No Oudsema really isn't 'that bad', he has a CH ranking of 255 so I presume that there are extenuating circumstances behind his drop in the rankings.

Evans seems to have one over several of the other Brits - he obviously has an up and coming & powerful game but he also seems to have a mental edge which can just tip the balance when playing against a potentially tricky fellow countryman.

Surely you can see the logic behind directly forcing British players to circumnavigate the world several times over every year to play against players who have the luxery of competing in many home challengers & thus having access to point heavy tournaments whilst not having to fork out £1000s of pounds on flights; not to mention the mental drain that travel can cause.

Simple really.

Slightly dissapointing but you can't really expect people to be turning over 400 place differentials every day.

Oudesma also seems like a good player at futures level whose ranking seems to have suffered as consequence of going for challenger level events. Will be an interesting game between him and Evans as both lost to Lacko last week.

You're probably right about Oudsema, but I was excecting Colin to win that (in which case we would have had a guaranteed finalist) so that's definitely disappointing.

I see Evo beat Eaton even more convincingly this week, which probably eases one DC selection issue for JL, though it was good to see Chris getting back to back wins in a main draw and hence getting some ranking points - the only other time he's managed back to back wins in a main draw since Wimby was in UAE F2 in November.

I wasn't especting much from the other two QFs, for obvious reasons and while it's sad to see Josh and Matt get so few games, they've had more than reasonable weeks by their standards.

The usual round-up with rankings:

QF: Colin Fleming WR 648 lost to Scott Oudsema (USA) WR 649 by 7-6(4) 6-3 bleh
QF: Dan Evans WR 477 beat Chris Eaton WR 390 by 3 & 2 biggrinbleh
QF: (WC) Joshua Milton WR 748 lost to (3) Lukas Lacko (SVK) WR 325 by 3 & 2 cry
QF: Matthew Illingworth WR 709 lost to (5) Stéphane Robert (FRA) WR 367 by 0 & 2 cry

SF: Dan Evans WR 477 v Scott Oudsema (USA) WR 649

good chance for Dan to make the final, and if he does then its a good test either way to give us a better idea of how he will fare at challenger lvl.

If Dan Evans continues with similar progress from last year he's likely to get to about 200 where Josh Goodall is by the end of the year which will get him into Aussie Open qualies - I'd say that's a more realistic target. It generally takes the good juniors with the talent and self-belief that he seems to have about 3 years to break onto the ATP tour it seems. Will be happy if he proves me wrong and steps up to challengers with ease but on evidence so far he's getting some solid wins but not storming through futures yet. And he's got a lot of points to win before he gets into even 35K challengers on DE.

Top 100 isnt impossible, but it's tough, really to do it he will need to build up a winning wave of momentum. We also need to see him beating better players soon. i havent seen him beat a player i'd regard as challenger lvl yet. a win over lacko or robert would be a good start tho.
If he can start winning at that level, well then things can change quick.
