Don't write Smethurst off completely by the way. When he's hot he's hot.

Fleming win 7-6, 7-6, and plays bloom again. Going for 3 in a row?

Well, he used to be ranked 130, now he's only just in the top 400, but he beat Slabba and Wardy in straights in Sep & Oct 2008 so he can't be too bad these days - got to be classed as a great result for Milton, I think.

We are so far from 'turning in the corner' in mens tennis that I cant see the corner approaching yet. But its good to see our guys winning through to the latter stages of futures slightly more than normal. Next step doing it in tough european futures and then Challengers. When we start getting more than Boggo doing well in them I perhaps will strain further to see that illusive corner.

Surprised that Jonny lost!

Not really. Watched a bit of Illy last week against the Timo the Fin. Illy was up in both sets and what energy he has. He was up to the tennis task but his temper got in the way. Timo has now beaten Baker and I think that shows Illy's performance last week in a better light.

lovely jubbley from milton, he's proving himself - i predict a 10k title for him this year provided he stays healthy and does a bit of travelling

In the corresponding event last year we had three into R2. Bloomers, Flan and Smith. Bloomers was top seed but lost in the semis - the other two went out in R2, and of the 5 British match victories during the tournament only 1 was against a non-Brit.

Already this year we have 8 into R2 - 5 wins against non-Brits and 2 guaranteed Quarterfinalists.

Obviously it's just one tournament but I think (bleak though the mens scene still is) it's a big improvement and look forward to seeing how the year pans out.

Great that Smethurst and Milton and Pauffley upset the odds in addition to a few of the matches we had slightly more realistic hopes for victory in.

Flembo now looks to go 3-0 up against Bloomers
