Week 2 - WTA (600K) - Sydney, Australia Hard

Well, guess who won the battle of the big hitters with a KO in R2!

L32: Melanie South WR 110 beat Marion Bartoli (FRA) WR 17 by 1-1 ret. biggrin

Unbelievable luck, but let's be honest, she deserves the points after those three qualifying wins! Thank goodness she doesn't have to get to AO Q, eh!biggrin

I make it that she now has 610 (current) + (20 for qualifying + 60 for reaching R2) - 18 (16th best) = 672 points

This week's no. 100 has 690 and this week's 101 has 666, so she's as on the edge of the top 100 as it's possible to be!

Looking at TBE's list it puts Mel at 101 and 6 or 7 points short of a top 100 place.

L16: Melanie South WR 110 v (8) Caroline Wozniacki (DEN) WR 12

Wozniacki thrashed world no. 19 Cibulkova 1 & 2 tonight, so is in ominous form ...

^Yeah and Cibulkova played really well in the hopman cup beating Dinara in 3, SVK took home the title.

But Lets just hope the Wozniacki of last week turns up and Mel plays amazingly well. She still has a chance if shes playing well. GO MEL!

Wow, a lovely stroke of luck for Mel, I hope she can make the most of it in the next match, though I'd be very surprised if she managed a W.

Ouch. Strong tournament! You would think that beating Bartoli in R1 would mean getting an easier ride in R2, but Mel get landed with Wozniacki. Good luck anyway Melanie.

Wow, just a bit !   Bartoli ( WR 17 ) not seeded and Wozniacki ( WR 12 ) seeded 8th.

I suppose you could say she would expect to play a seed in one of the first 2 rounds and to get the 8th seed in the second rond after winning on retiral in the first round is as good as Mel could hope for.

...with Serena rounding out the top quarter. Not the nicest of quarters to get drawn into really. The Wozniacki match will be very interesting but I'd LOVE to see a Serena-Mel match biggrin

I had a funny feeling that Mel would win by retirement - backed up by the fact that Bartoli has a lot of form in that department (retired 10 times in the last 3 years). She deserves the good fortune and points, as 20 points would have been such a poor return for beating 3 players around the top 100 (less than winning 3 25K matches against much weaker opposition)

.... That's the WTA rankings promise. It's not who you beat, its where you beat them. Those three qualies wins were all harder than to qualify for the AO, but got a third of the points....

Mel is up on the SB, and is 2-1* down at present. It would be very surprising if Mel gets close to winning this, Wozniacki is the rising star of womens tennis at just 18 and is being tipped to be a multiple slam winner in the future.

EDIT: But they way the GB girls are going at the moment there is always hope! And with Mel tantilisingly close to the top 100 it might just drive her on to success.

Wow, two love holds from Mel to start the match and she just took the Dane to deuce - she must be fired up!

Mel broken from 30-15

Now has 3bps of her own. 15-40 2nd serve 30-40 40-40 another bp 40-A saved again 40-40 A- holds

Close match but on the key points CW has won every single one of them so far. I suspect a couple of Mel's bp opportunities came against 2nd serves so that's disappointing.

Mel serving *2-5

15-15 15-30 15-40 30-40 broken 2-6

Early stages were close but Wozniacki dominated towards the end of the set
