Mel has come on leaps and bounds these past three matches. She got to 110 in the rankings on the back of playing some fairly weak tournaments, but by thrashing two players in the top 100 and then an old nemisis she has proven she can very easily become a fixture in the top 100 like Anne has.

This is great for our Fed Cup team as well, with Anne & Mel doing so well plus Sarah in the doubles, we could be in with a shot for promotion this year.

Three great wins, let's hope Mel gets a break and draw E Starr (WC), a win against her would give Mel 80 ranking points and a possiblity of breaking the top 100. Otherwise its Kanepi or Bartoli.

Great run Mel. 3 excellent wins - very, very encouraging start to 2009.

Mel plays Bartoli in the first round. They will be the second match on their court tomorrow. Not the best draw, but there's nothing to lose and she can go in to the match feeling positive, and Bartoli might be a little tired from this week's tournament.

excellent to see Mel qualify, not the best of draws but it's always better to get the chance of an upset in the first round, before the other player has settled into the tournament, so fingers crossed.

Probably the worst of the five possible draws in fact cry certainly the highest ranked opponent she could have got.

Still, Mel improved from a 1 & 3 loss to Bartoli in Eastbourne 2007 to a 6-3 6-7(5) 6-0 loss to her in Canada last July, maybe she can improve on that last result too.

Well done Mel. At least she can go into the game a little more comfortable knowing she doesnt have to rush off to qualifying.

Very impressive Mel. I thought that she would struggle at the start of 2009 after her heavy schedule in Autumn 2008, but am pleased to be proved wrong.

Wow! So pleased for Mel! My favourite two brits doing so well!

Mel vs Bartoli
Anne vs Szavay

So amazing just to see them both playing these people in the same week without being in England. It doesn't seem weird to see annes name among these players anymore and its getting like that with mel, Go Brits!!
