According to the updated rankings on TennisForum.com she will be 56 points away in next Monday's rankings, so she needs to qualify and win a round here to be competitive.

Mel's second qualifying round match is scheduled 3rd on court 6 (first match starts at 10pm GMT)

Not to get too far ahead of myself, but the other seed in Mel's section, Safarova, retired hurt in her match with Meng Yuan.

Mel survived a couple of break points on her own serve and then broke to take the 1st set. Mel seems to be gradually getting the better of Barrois' powerful but erratic serve and winning more points on her own serve.
