RE: Week 1 - Challenger (75K) - Nouméa, New Caledonia, FRA

That's about the score I expected (if there's any matches you can rely on Boggo to win, it's matches against younger Brits when he actually gets to play them), so it seems plausible enough. Then again, if they were trying to con us, they probably would come up with a plausible score. wink

Alex (note how I'm still hedging my bets ...) will play a wild card in the QFs, either Jonathan Dasnières de Veigy or Florian Mayer. Since Mayer is a former world no. 33 who has been out injured and beat the no. 2 seed easily in R1, it's likely to be him.

That R2 match is unlikely to get on court tonight, I think (it's already 11 pm there) and with the weather due to improve a bit tomorrow, Mayer might have to play DdV in the morning and then Alex in the afternoon, which is good because if Mayer is rediscovering his old form, Alex will need any advantage he can get to stand a chance.

pleased with the result. Slabba can leave with confidence and Boggo can leave with points.

L16: Alex Bogdanovic WR 190 beat (Q) Alex Slabinsky WR 350 by 3 & 5 smilecry

QF: Alex Bogdanovic WR 190 v (WC) Florian Mayer (GER) WR 409 (CH 33 / PR 213, though he didn't need to use it to get in)

i.e. result confirmed, and Boggo will play Mayer, who did manage to play his match against DdV today and won in straight sets, but encouragingly they were close sets.

I agree with JL, and this means that both Alexes have got two rounds further than they were seeded to - that can't be bad! smile.gif

Boggo is due to play his QF 2nd after 4 pm (05.00 GMT) on Thursday, with the doubles QF to follow a couple of matches later.

I've just noticed that Montcourt (who was 5-1 up against Recouderc when their match was suspended) was the only seed who survived R1 here!

ATP confirms that boggo won 63 75.
will play Mayer next, whose match has also finished it seems - there goes stevens idea.

Mayer was pushed this time tho, still straight sets but 76(2) 75, agaimnst p layer ranked 345 may mean boggo has a chance.

the only seed left is moncourt, whose 2nd rd match with roucerec doesnt seem to have finished.

But Kubeck (knocked out top seed) & Mayer are still in thos there si some dangerous floaters :)

Sweeting & Linsard are the others left in Alex's section.

from the lta site who have updated pretty quickly and with a shred of info!!

Alex Bogdanovic saw off Alex Slabinsky 6-3 7-5 in the second round at the $75k Challenger in Noumea, New Caledonia. In a rain interrupted match, the British No.2 trailed 0-40 when serving at 6-3 6-5 but turned the game around to book a spot in the quarter-final.

So Alex got tight serving it out, but i guess he must have only just broken slabba at 5-5 to take a 6-5 lead then, or am i wrong?

It's nearly midnight in Nouméa and still no results, but looking at the OoP, they had five matches scheduled after 6 pm on the main court, including one "to finish", which suggests they were intending to carry on playing into the early hours even if there were no delays!

*shock* The LTA has the info first, they must be getting it phoned through to them (impressive!) ... not good news though, unfortunately:

"Alex Bogdanovic's run at the $75k Challenger in Noumea came to an end on Thursday at the quarter-final stage. The British No.2 lost a long three setter against German wildcard Florian Mayer 6-7(3) 7-5 1-6.

However, Bogdanovic is also through to the last eight in the doubles with Josh Goodall. The British pair, who are seeded No.4, are set to face either Stephane Bohli of Switzerland and Alexandre Sidorenko of France or Romanians Victor Crivoi and Victor Ionita."

Not bad taking Mayer to 3 sets, but a pity he wasn't able to edge it.

thats a shame. guess alex ran out of steam in the 3rd, or Mayer upped a gear, but the 1st 2 sets were close so thats a good sign, shame alex couldnt take the TB.
I wonder if they manager to play the dubs? hopefully was pushed back as i doubt alex would ahve anyhting left for it.

still its a decent preparation for AOQ, probablt better than he has had in past.

Bleh, that puts paid to the strange amounts of optimism I felt about that match. A 'boggo-ish' [sorry] final set aside, full steam ahead for AOQ - hopefully Alex has taken some confidence from his matches.

A Bit more info on the boggo/slabba match, seems like there were a lot of breaks.:

Alex Bogdanovic won an all-British second-round match in the New Caledonia challenger tournament when he defeated Ukraine-born Alexander Slabinsky.

Slabinsky, ranked 160 places lower in the world than Bogdanovic at 350, exchanged breaks of serve early in the first set but after a one-hour rain delay went down 6-3.

Bogdanovic served for the set at 5-4 only to be broken. Slabinsky had three break points when Bogdanovic served for the match at 6-5 but the younger man was finally overcome.

Slabinsky has had a fine start to the year, going through qualifying and beating three players ranked in the 200s, and is one of the big hopes for players who could develop and help strengthen the Davis Cup team.

Bogdanovic, also through to the last eight in the doubles with Josh Goodall, is likely to face Germanys Florian Mayer.

I imagine the info's coming from John Lloyd who's almost certainly out there watching these 4 through new caledonia and aussie open quals with 1 of boggo/goodall/ward/slabinsky going to make the second singles spot for the Ukraine tie

I know that Lloyd really rates Slabba after watching him at queens last year and he's always had a lot of good stuff to say about Goodall in the past

Probably Boggo's best ever start to a year...he's never made it past rd2 in new caledonia in the past

He really doesn't like the rebound ace/plexicushion courts so taking Mayer that close shows he may be working out how to produce his best tennis on it

not really a surpise, especially if alex had to play later the same day.

i'd agree that this is alex's best start down under, his best ever start was probably when he won bergmao then wrexham, but it was a late start.

btw the extra info i had on the match came from the daily express website.
