QR2: Georgie Stoop WR 216 lost to Kathrin Wörle (GER) WR 162 (CH 138 6/2006) by 3-6 7-5 14-12

I arrived just at the start of the third set and what followed was the most amazing set of Tennis I have ever watched in person. Georgie served for the match at 5 - 3 but Woerle broke her serve, held then broke again to serve for the match herself. Most players would have crumbled but Georgie showed great determination to break Woerle's serve to make it 6 - 6. What followed was, what could be a described as, a game of cat and mouse. Woerle would break Georgie's serve then Georgie would break right back. At one point, Georgie had two match points but unfortunately hit her forehand long on both occasions. The tension was growing courtside and there was also a large crowd as word had obviously spread around Melbourne Park about this unbelievable match. Unfortunately it came to an end for Georgie at 12-13 when Woerle served for the match. Georgie saved several match points with some agressive hitting but Woerle eventually served out to win the match.

QR2: (q19) Elena Baltacha WR 134 beat Carly Gullickson (USA) WR 151 (= CH) by 5-7 6-0 6-0

This match had already started on the court next to Georgie's match towards the end of that momentous last set. After Georgie's match had finished, I went for a quick toilet break and stumbled across Andy Murray practicing on show court 3 so that distracted me for a good while. I arrived back at the start of the third set and Baltacha was showing more of the great form that was on evidence yesterday. Some great serving helped her achieve the double bagel and she is looking really good for qualification for the main draw.

QR2: Katie O'Brien WR 160 beat (q3) Julie Ditty (USA) WR 115 (CH 89 3/2008) by 3-6 6-3 6-3

This was expected to be a tough match, given Ditty's seeding of 3, and as expected, Ditty took the first set. O'Brien really upped her game after this though and for the remainder of the match, you would have thought the Brit was the higher ranked player. Big deep hitting was a feature of her game and Ditty was struggling to cope with this. She tried to counter this on occasions using the moonball but it didn't work. O'Brien served out the last game to love and fully deserved the victory.

A great day for British Womens Tennis at Melbourne Park! Great performances from both Elena & Katie to make it four in the main draw

FQR: (q19) Elena Baltacha WR 134 beat (q1) Jelena Kostanic Tosic (CRO) WR 112 (CH 32 7/2004) by 1 & 3

Again, wow! What a performance from Elena and I repeat my thoughts of this morning that she is in superb form just now. Elena is hitting her groundstrokes very powerfully (Kostanic Tosic was clearly unable to cope with the power of Elena's shots) and is also serving extremely well. She seems to be so focused and fired up in each match that she has played this week. To be fair, Kostanic Tosic was not at her best and was struggling with her serve but Elena did what she had to. A slight wobble when serving for the match at 5-2 but did very well to break the Croat's serve immediately after to clinch the match.

FQR: Katie O'Brien WR 160 beat (q21) Betina Jozami (ARG) WR 137 (= CH) by 6-0 7-6(2)

I actually completely missed the first set as after Elena's match, I went for a toilet break and a walk around the practice courts and when I came back, Katie had already delivered a bagel in the first!!!! A bit of nerves when she served for the game at 5-3 and got broken but some really confident play brought up four match points in the tiebreak and she duly delivered.

I don't normally follow Womens Tennis too deeply but I have been thoroughly impressed with all the British female players this week. There have been slight "wobbles" from each of the players when closing out matches but they all seem to have total belief and determination, and that is clearly on display on court. Nigel Sears and the rest of the coaching staff at the LTA have done a great job and it's going to be an exciting week (or perhaps fortnight) for British Womens Tennis here in Melbourne!
