So tempted to go tomorrow but i told myself to stay away from the qualies cause I'm going to get burn out. Have some stuff to do in the morning but with both on the same court one after another i may pop over to lend my support.
I'm pretty glad I went to bed after the first set of Stoop's match. i'd have been like a zombie in work today otherwise.
What a rollercoaster.
Dead pleased for Bally and Katie OB. The points in qualies are GOOD.
... though in the strange world that is the WTA, the QR1 win is worth 40 points, and the QR2 and QR3 wins earn an extra 10 points each, taking you to 50 and then 60 points.
Thus, Georgie will do almost as well as Bally and Katie for points.... the critical thing in ranking terms is to get that QR1 win. Next big points gain only comes with winning MD R1, which nets a lovely 100 points in addition to any qualie points.
If you are going to suffer an agonising defeat in Grand Slam qualies like Georgie then QR2 is the best round to do so because:
a) of the points structure mentioned above b) it means she breaks her grand slam duck, but shouldn't feel like she missed out on qualifying. After that epic she would have had little chance of beating Lapuschenkova tonight. Neuza Silva also won 14-12 in the third in round 1, but there was never much likelihood of her winning her second match (she lost in straight sets to Puchkova).
Hopefully Georgie will eventually get over her disappointment and be proud of her efforts (and entertainment value!).
Bally's opponent plays mainly clay-court tournaments, but the Australian Open is her best Grand Slam, having reached the 3rd round three times, so it will be a tough test, but I sense Bally is up for it. Jozami v Katie is a good draw for both players, since neither has qualified for a Slam before.
We really need at least one of Bally and Katie to come through, as Bally, Anne, Mel, Katie and Naomi have all been in the FQR for a slam since Bally qualified here in 2005, so it is important that this losing sequence is broken.
Everything crossed for Elena & Katie. I'll be on tenterhooks when I log on, or check my mobile, for the results in the morning. There's no way I can stay up through the wee small hours to follow their efforts.
fantastic results for Elena and Katie shame for georgir but Georgie turning into really good prospect. I saw her in Edinburgh as a young kid she is feisty and will make the grade
