There is this strange phenomenon that playing seniors often seems to make you more likely to lose against weaker junior opponents - you stop waiting for your opponent to make mistakes (a common way of winning at juniors), and play more aggressive tennis (that you don't need to play to win).
I've been playing with open office and produced a spreadsheet of the possible results. Here is how I believe it will work out (but I could be wrong - it's complicated):
1. If Laura reaches the singles final, she is #1, unless Ana Bogdan wins singles and reaches the semi finals in doubles and does one round better than laura in doubles.
2. If Laura goes out in the singles semi, she is #1 unless Ana wins singles, or Ana is runner up in singles and reaches the doubles final and does 2 rounds better than Laura in doubles.
3. If Laura goes out in the singles quarters, she is #1 if: a) Ana is runner up in singles and Larua wins doubles and Ana doesn't reach the doubles final, or b) Ana goes out in the singles semi final and doesn't win doubles, or c) Ana doesn't make the singles semi final.
4. If Laura goes out in the R16, she is #1 if she wins doubles and Ana doesn't make the singles final.
5. If Laura doesn't achieve any of the above and Ana makes the singles final, Ana is #1. Otherwise, Arantxa Rus is #1.
However....
There are some ties, and I'm not sure who wins then:
- Laura: R64 or R32 singles, Ana: SF singles WR doubles = Ana+Arantxa tied.
- Laura: QF singles, R32 or R16 doubles, Ana: SF singles, WR doubles = All three tied.
Stephanie Cornish vs. Mallory Burdette (USA) (5) Heather Watson (8) vs. Asia Muhammad (USA) Hannah James vs. Beatrice Gumulya (INA) (6) Laura Robson (2) vs. Julia Samuseva (RUS)
Natalie and Steph are the only ones playing today. I doubt whether Heather will have recovered from her effort during the last 2 tournaments to win a tough opener here, and given Steph and Hannah' draw I only expect Laura to progress in the U18s
