RE: The Times

Oh, yeah. Dan read an online post by some random chap, calling him the next Andy Murray, and at that very moment, his career changed forever. confuse

Honestly... no one is the next anyone. Dan is the first and last Daniel Evans, and he knows it much better than you or I do.

Dan again? You know what I actually can't be bothered to write a post to even talk about my reaction to this latest commentary on Dan and I think that says enough. I've stated repeatedly in the past that he needs to get a move on or he's gonna miss his opportunity to make it, and nothing's materialised in the mean time. Frankly I'm tired of Mr Evans. Whoever said he was the next Andy Murray was just plain wrong, I've said it before and I stand by that statement.

I suggest you read my post properly next time before responding. I've been disagreeing with the idea that Dan is "the next" anyone.

Are you quite conscious of the fact that the nation might be sort of looking already to who's going to be the next Andy Murray?

DANIEL EVANS: I don't know. I mean, everybody just wants Andy to win at the minute, which is good...But whilst he's winning, I don't think any eyes or going on any of the others. Nobody knows who we are anyways, that's the best way. And rightly so. Let's be honest, we're all 200, 300; they shouldn't know who we are.

-------------------------------------

Erm, if even Dan Evans (who's never been scared of blowing his own trumpet) completely brushes off any comparisons between the two, what's the likelihood that people like Draper, Rusedski or OEM have been saying he's the next Andy Murray?

P.S. i found this article by typing in the words "Dan Evans" and "next Andy Murray" into google to see what i could find. The only other significant links were your posts from this thread and the greatunclebulgaria post.

doesn't seem like there's a lot of support for your claims...

Ha Ha,  I'm not sure anyone posting in this thread is saying he is or was the next Andy Murray.  As far as I can see folk you're basically agreeing with each other  smile

Yeah! My whole point was that most tennis players (Evo definitely) are far too mature to care about comparisons like these - even if they are being made. (Or they are intelligent enough to not read newspapers.)

Didn't want it to sound like a dig at our resident Big Cat or GUB. smile.gif

who had more hype:

Boggo as next Henman
Dan as next Murray

but lets face it it's not like this is unique to tennis, the british media do this to every promising young sport star.

Not just the British media. It happens in every place in the world and it's not exactly a shock that it happens, is it?

In any case, why are we talking of "Dan is the next Murray" hype when there wasn't much of it? We should be talking of "Graeme Dyce is the next Murray" instead - now that's what I call real hype.

Hype is not that bad in one way, you know... It's extremely necessary for private sponsors.

3. Ana Ivanovic has become the star once more we know she can be. It has been a tortuous few months for her but the signs are getting better.

4. Andy Roddick will prove that he has cast aside the bitter disappointment of his performance at Wimbledon this year and that he is about to rattle a lot of cages in New York

5. Alex Bogdanovic will successfully qualify for the US Open.

looks like number 3 could well happen, Ana makes the Cincy semis only dropping 1set. hope this doesn't make Boggo's hopes less likely lol

It is not the media but those inside British tennis increasingly desperate for male success who kept telling us that Dan Evans might be the next Andy Murray, which is a difficult cross to bear. We did not say "Dan has a great tennis IQ" which was stated at last year's US Open but simply quoted the man who said it. He was picked for successive Davis Cup ties and then dropped like a hot potato, not by the media but by those in charge. BTW I have recently started on Twitter @NeilHarmanTimes if anyone out there is interested. I'll be up to speed next week at the US Open qualifying. Currently I'm on my holidays.....

Thanks Neil, but what a shame having to finish a holiday and then go and watch the US Open - but as they say "someone has to do it"! eyepopping.gif

Sounds fair enough - who said what about whom tends to get lost in the random noise around British tennis.

So you survived the sharks at Cape Cod then? smile (and they didn't just mean a well known journo had been spotted there? wink) Yes, you've already been 'discovered' on Twitter - about time too, the Daily Mail boys have been stealing a march on you there ...

There's hope for OEM on Twitter yet - my fav tennis-related tweet of the week so far (and that's in a pre-BOTB week too!):

"Tried to sneak into ATP players' meeting wearing sunglasses, covering face and holding up the union motif on my shirt. Failed!!"

biggrin

LOL yes. We're assertively agreeing on the point that Dan is not "the next so-and-so", we're just disagreeing on the minor point of whether or not he has been stated as this over the past years. But frankly I think Count Zero wins the thread with his excellently summed up statement; "but lets face it it's not like this is unique to tennis, the british media do this to every promising young sport star."

I've certainly had the sense recently that there has been a shift from directing this towards Dan to directing this towards Oliver Golding. I hope Ollie steers clear of the newspapers and doesn't pay the pressure any mind. Sometimes I get the sense from Dan that he's let it affect him too much, for example at the two DC ties he played, and when he lost in those he beat himself up far too much over it.

I apologise, Salmon. It's frustration that pushes me into impatience, that's my fault. I'm really really tired of all my life everyone asking me for help, or just being plain thoughtless or ignorant, and I'm having difficulty coming to terms with it. I thought that you had posted having not bothered to properly read my post, and I was just so sick of dealing with people who don't pay attention (I mean in my outside life, if anyone is wondering - there's a reason why I like it here and that's mainly because it's one of the few places I can be assured of intelligent conversation), and I got very frustrated.

Hilarious tweet from OEM. biggrin.gif
