Perhaps they've decided that since they're going to double this year's points at the start of 2009 but less than double this year's points are going to be available per tournament next year (e.g. even for slams where the winner gets 2000, the points for earlier rounds are less than double what they were this year), they'd better find a way to 'lose' a load of points from the system, and Etienne de Villiers thought randomly excluding 1/3 of the players would bea good way to do it without anybody noticing.

Actually when you think that very many players share the same ranking when you get down to ranking points in single figures, the amount missing must be much more than 600. How on earth can they make such a mistake and not even realise?
