RE: Week 45 - Women's ITF(10K) - Sunderland (new thread)

Excellent results, and pleased that Tara has dispelled my doubts about her comeback from injury. One quirk which I imagine not many will be aware of, is that out of the four juniors it is Sam who has the highest % W-L record in ITF Juniors this year (21-4), albeit in lower grade events.

Is Jen Ren the older or the younger one?

Sam has made great progress-but the grade of event is pretty crucial at juniors. The top 10 juniors only turn up to GA/GS events really - and those events are therefore significantly a step up from others, with some seriously strong players.

Tara vs Laura. I think they might both be up for that one. Anyone any near Sunderland?

Every time I see Tara's ranking, I mentally give her back her 12 points lost from her 25K SF.... Sad that rules must be rules.

fantastic set of results there from the girls. A really exciting bunch coming through I think and I look forward to the years ahead with them all!! biggrin.gif

Happycynic, what's the story with the 12 points for Tara you mention? I've completely missed that, please could someone point me in the right direction to find out!! Thanks.

Jen is about 18 months older than Jessica, Jen finished 3rd in the under 12's at the orange bowl in 2005 in 2006 Jessica won the under 12'S beating Laura Robson in the S/F

I didn't want any of them to lose but I'm happy with those results.

I think Laura will win fairly easily in the final though, but Sam has had a fantastic week.

Sam keeps up her remarkable record in close matches: she has played 11 3 setters in ITF seniors/juniors this year and won the lot! Laura must be favourite to win the final in straight sets though.

Laura was amazing today, tara played very good aswell and the match was a lot closer than the scoreline suggested. the match was about break point conversions, with laura braking the serve of moore's at 3-3 and at 5-3, however laura saved all of the 5bp's against her in the first set.
Second set was slightly more one sided with tara getting more and more frustrated at not taking her chances on the robson serve and after braking serve at 2-2 laura showed her class to win the next 4 games and the match

top 100 next year for laura and if tara gets mentally stronger i can see her being top250 next year

Thanks for the report, Jack.

Laura should win comfortably against Sam, but who knows?

I've just noticed that the Vickers-Ren semi also decided who will be the next girl to enter the GB top 25 - whoever won would have made it there on Monday week, so it'll be Samantha.

I don't see Laura making the top 100 next year. She may be good enough to do so on a level playing field, but said playing field isn't level. It requires circa 350 points, and there is a 10 tournament limit for 15 year old's. She would need to average over 30 points a tournament - that's around twice what Anne is doing this year. It means her average (not best) performance would have to be winner of a 50K or semi-finalist of a 100K.

Those she is competing against can play as many tournaments as they like and count their best 17 performances, so only playing 10 puts her at a huge disadvantage . P.s. I'm not suggesting this is unfair, or juniors should be allowed to play more - just explaining why a top 100 is unlikely.

However, she does stand a reasonable chance of finishing the junior's ranked #1 at year end, which comes with a 75k and 2x 50k main draw wild cards for next year. I've just looked at the acceptance lists for three of the four remaining grade 1/grade A tournaments, and she is only competing with Arantxa Rus (1) & Ana Bogdan (7) for the top spot. The other top juniors haven't entered these events, and Laura has far fewer points to defend for the rest of the year, so it is looking good on that front.
