Week 45 - Futures F18 (10K) - Sunderland, UK

Bloomers (probably top seed again), Skups, Bam-Bam and Illingworth are DAs here, while Cox, Flan, Milton and Fleming are all higher on the Alt list than the no 2 qualifying seed (the top seed in qualifing, Insausti, wasn't on the original entry list) so I imagine that some of them have got in as DAs or got WCs.

The ITF only has 16 names down on the entry list, so Cox and Flan, being in the first 4 alternates, would have got in without the use of a WC, while Fleming and Milton probably got WC's, with Smethurst and Willis possibly getting the other 2 as they are missing from qualifying

Not expecting many to joint them in the main draw though; only the guarenteed qualifer from section 5, and probably Arlidge and Rice as the other 2 who make it

That sounds more than plausible to me, though I'm sure we'll get at least one surprise wild card.

Looking at the ITF fact sheet reveals that the recommended hotel in Sunderland is £75 per night. (inc breakfast)
While last week at the London event there were five recommended hotels £30-£45 per night (no breakfast)

So that must be some breakfast served in Sunderland but it really cuts into any winnings. Just think what this costs the losers in the qualifying round who get nothing! It also certainly spoils the prospect of winning enough money to pay for the next trip abroad or even to Jersey!

I noticed that too. You'd think they'd find a cheaper option to offer. Even the winner's likely to be out of pocket if they pay that much per day for a week!

Pretty amazing for Beckles seeing as his average seems to be two wins, in qualifying, a year

I didn't have a chance to look Beckles up on ITF yesterday, but you're right, this really has come out of the blue.

Having said that, he's been competitive against ranked players in the past, e.g. only losing 4 & 4 to Bam Bam in Glasgow this year, taking a set off Fitzy in Ilkley this year, etc, and he beat Ashley Watling (now ranked) twice in the second half of last year.

I wonder if he can make it three in row today - of course he'd need four in a row to get a ranking point - it's tough out there!

Think Beckles has gone unnoticed by us, is because he was playing for Barbados rather than GB until July.

Lots of brilliant wins there in the qualies!  Mat James, in particular, seems to be putting in some good results now. smile

He did, too:  7-6(1) 6-7(5) 6-2! biggrin  Quite a battle by the looks of it! eyepopping.gif  Other Brit qualifiers:  Pauffley (3 & 2), Bains (7-6(3) 6-4) & Arlidge (4-6 6-3 6-4).  Full results here.  Shame Ricey couldn't justify his seeding, losing in two hard-fought tie-breaks: 6-7(10) 6-7(8)! cry  Niall Angus pushed the top seed, Insausti, hard, too:  6-4 2-6 0-6!
