Anne is in the bottom quarter, with a reasonable starter by the standards of this tournament (both Meusburger and Anne are top 100 but unseeded). Meusburger is strongest on clay and has not won a match since the US Open. However Brit-basher Niculescu is then likely to bar her path, and she has thrashed Anne twice this year (Australian Open/Bangalore)
(6)Monica Niculescu (ROU) v (wc)Kristina Kucova (SVK) Anne Keothavong (GBR) v Yvonne Meusburger (AUT) (wc)Lenka Wienerova (SVK) v Q (2)Iveta Benesova (CZE) v Lucie Hradecka (CZE)
Excellent first round win. I think Anne has already proven that her ranking is no fluke. I really think top 50 is realistic. What I think she really needs to move onto the next step is a win against a big name player. She's run Bartoli close and done well against Venus and Dementieva without getting a set but I can't think of any single victory that was really "Wow!" (Schiavone being the best, I guess). I think once she gets a top scalp the belief it will give her will raise her game to the next level.
