The last open event on the 2008 WTA Tour sees Sarah Borwell in qualifying, though her main interest will be in the doubles, where she needs a very good week to close on the top 100.
Singles qualifying:
[2] Mara Santangelo (ITA) vs. Alexandra Stevenson (USA) Alexa Glatch (USA) vs. Maria Mokh (RUS) Sarah Borwell (GBR) vs. Angela Haynes (USA) Mallory Cecil (USA) vs. [8] Alberta Brianti (ITA)
Play starts at 2pm BST tomorrow and Sarah is 5th match on the Court Banque Nationale following Spears v Perry
I imagine so, providing they haven't fallen out after the heavy defeat in Luxembourg. I don't expect the doubles draw will be made until Sunday though - then we'll find out.
Pleased to see Sarah and Courtney back to winning ways against fairly strong opposition. Next up is either second seeds Vania King(USA)/ Anna Lena Groenefeld(GER) or Steph Dubois(CAN) / Severine Bremond (FRA) who are on court at present.
Brilliant, I am so pleased for them. Hope they can surprise us and win another match.
It will be the 2nd seeds Groenefeld/King in the QF who beat Bremond/Dubois 6-2, 6-2.
PS I Have just noticed Melanie Oudin has beaten the world no.26 Sybille Bammer. That makes Gerogie Stoop 6-3, 6-1 demolition of her in Troy look even better!
Unfortunately that defeat virtually kills off any chance Sarah had of making top 100 this year. However the fact that Sarah (& partner) is quite often able to compete well in WTA events improves her chance of being selected for the Fed Cup. Most of the nations there will have a Tour player in the doubles, and Sarah has been far more successful at doubles than the other Brits in their limited forays at Tour level.
