Battle for the top

Yay, Andy's staying at no1 for awhile longer . I'm not sure when Rafa's next tournament is to challenge him, or when more of Andy's points come off. In any case I'll take the extension. It's a shame it's due to injury, but I guess all part of professional tennis.

Yes, just such a pity it's confirmed on the day Andy exits Wimbledon injury afflicted, but then Novak, the only remaining guy that could then take over the #1 spot retires due to injury.

Having missed the Canadian Masters prior to Rio last year, Andy has nothing to drop off until his Cincinnati Masters RU spot 600 points on 21st August.

1. Murray : 9390 - 2000 = 7390 + 360 = 7750
2. Nadal : 7285 - 0 = 7285 + 180 = 7465

For now :

3. Djokovic : 6055 - 90 = 5965 + 360 = 6325
4. Wawrinka : 6175 - 45 = 6130 + 10 = 6140

5. Federer : 5265 - 720 = 4545 + 720 = 5265 ( max 6545 )
6. Cilic : 4235 - 360 = 3875 + 720 = 4595 ( max 5875 )

I'd be curious to see how much the big 4 play before the US Open. I have a feeling that Federer has set a precedent now for the big 4 in resting from events. I know the requirements of playing a certain number of ATP Masters etc but I can see Nadal, Novak and Andy skipping events as they get older now even despite the relative youth of 4-5 years they have on Roger. Particularly as there as really no challengers to their thrones just now. It could be as long as another 3-4 years til we see a new breed. I can still see Andy, Novak, Rafa and Stan winning Slams for next 4-5 years yet. And continuing to dominate most of them.

Just over 2 months ago in the Madrid Masters thread, after Borna Coric had beaten Andy in R2, you posted:

"That's Andy Murray's last match in his 20s, changing of the guard time in tennis? Zverev, Thiem, Coric, Goffin all stepping up now.

It's actually looking unlikely Andy will be Top 4 never mind Number 1 at season end."

Now you could well be right re paragraph 2, especially now. But its the first paragraph I'd kind of recalled and went back and looked. I think you've got the bases well covered with that post and this latest one

Thanks Indy, so hopefully Andy will retain his no 1 spot until Cincy (at least). I'll take that, it's a month longer than I expected.

Yes I do remember that post Indiana. I don't do points scoring though unlike some it seems. Did you see the question mark in that statement? It was a question not a fact, not really even an opinion. For now it's been answered, hence my 3-4 current statement. I also said we'd have a clearer picture after Wimbledon did I not? But then you've been selective there of course. And people are allowed to change their opinion when presented with the facts. Also a British trait in many is to remain stoic and blindly loyal to what they believe in of course. I tend to be more open minded naturally.

Last bit remains true though, be very hard for Andy to be above Novak and Stan and he almost certainly won't be above Roger and Rafa. Doesn't take any hard sums to work that out.

I quoted your post in full ( I made sure I did ), no mention of a clearer picture after Wimbledon there nor do I see any other post of yours in that thread.

So there they are, I just found them interesting just two months apart, whatever re a question mark after the statement though none after the players "all stepping up now" or for a week or two anyway.

April 3rd, check my post then. Clearly says after Wimbledon. That's over 3 months ago.

So the initial post was a question not an opinion or fact and the post on April 3rd was a statement.

If you are going to be petty at least get your facts right Indiana.

Sorry folk, but I must address some nonsense here. Given it's very much at a tangent to the the real business of the thread feel free to pass on by.

Now, Jaggy, my "I don't do points scoring" ( yes, I did raise my eyebrows ) friend, I am sorry if you found my referring to two posts of yours just over two months apart a bit unnecessary, but rather than just say that or the stuff about entitled to change your mind and you had evidently ( though unsurprisingly unknown to me ) added more in another place at another time and somehow that was meant to be read with the Madrid post.

1) You accuse me of being "selective".

2) I point out that I quoted every word of your previous post in the Madrid thread and it was your only post there.

3) Rather than take back that quite wrong "selective" snipe you refer to some other post somewhere back in April ! While I recalled the essence of the Madrid post ( because I recalled rather disagreeing though I didn't say anything ) I am afraid I do not keep a log of all your posts let alone every word !!!

I don't know what's with this seeming machismo of never giving an inch and / or often just disappearing in other instances when you lose factual discussions / arguments unlike so many other posters. This latest episode is just very silly.

The thing is Indiana it's fair enough to select a quote to make a point but I was simply defending myself on what was said and meant, and also providing you with what I said on the topic just a page back.

But hey patronising and condescend me all you wish, I can handle it fine and well and you did make me laugh with the 'machismo' description something that anyone who knows me would also laugh it. I'd normally be offended by such an insult and derogatory term but you've reminded me of an EP by one of my favourite bands that I've not listened to in a while and now currently have playing as we speak. Never giving an inch is interesting as well, again incorrect.

On the points scoring think we are at Deuce now.

Maybe this is one of those contests that should be suspended due to fading light???

Agreed. I love this forum because there are so few or these kinds of posts, most people are polite and respectful - urm very British

They don't seem to want to point score or troll. Maybe if you want to do that you'd be better off with like minded people in MTF.

Indiana will see you over there Helen, if that's where they call people trolls. Seeing as this forum is for the elite and me too seeing as I'm not elite enough for your 'Britishness'. Do they have a sense of humour over there?

Match suspended as someone just hit the umpire with a ball

So, Novak won't be playing again this year. So that's him out of the 'battle for the top', not that he was really in it at this stage anyway. What it does mean is that when he comes back, he'll likely be somewhere between 12-16 in the rankings (I assume he won't get a PR?) and a very dangerous floater in Oz!
