RE: Fed Cup 2009 - Euro/Africa Zone Group 1

Still trying to comprehend why Anne was played instead of Mel in the doubles. cry

Terrific effort from the girls this week but it must be gut-wrenching to fall just short.

Last year we struggled to stay at this level because we didn't win a doubles match having lost Claire Curren. Having a specialist doubles player does make a difference in these three match ties.

Such a huge improvement one last year this week, but they end up back where they started. cry

We should at least have a higher seeding next year and there could be another 4 or 5 girls competing for places.

That's true, it must help our Fed Cup ranking, though Belarus will still be in there and whichever teams come down from the WG2 playoffs so it won't be easy.

Anne probably played due to Sarah being happier playing with her. Also, as far as I'm aware, Mel isn't the best volleyer (not that you have to be to play top 100 women's doubles, i.e. Jankovic winning Wimbledon mixed with Murray from the baseline). I once saw South and O'Brien win a wimbledon doubles match completely from the baseline.

A good week all in all and a great score from Anne against the world number 9!

A great effort by the girls, but sadly came up just short in the end, which probably was expected.

Very encouraging from Anne to only lose 7-6, 7-6 to Radwanska, which proves that she can challenge the top players, and hopefully she'll take confidence from that fact and go and move further up the rankings.

Maybe they just though that Anne would be a better option in the doubles than Mel and in hindsight it may have been the wrong decision, but I'm sure if Mel had played and we'd lost, there would be those who would have wanted to know why Anne didn't play.

A very encouraging week though in the end from them to come so close to qualifying - just have to go one step further next year

Great run by the girls. Must have been good to play in a team together and achieve the results they did, despite just being pipped in the last match.
