An article about Ross, who's very positive about the new regime and the NTC http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard-sport/article-23656567-details/No+sweat+for+Hutchins+as+he+takes+the+leading+role+in+Davis+Cup+bid/article.do - it also goes into some detail on the sweating problem that was allegedly the reason why he quit playing singles on a regular basis.

Maybe Lloyd still hasn't decided on who out of Ward/Fleming he wants to add to his squad and wants another night to sleep on a decision or wants to see one more training session from the pair of them.

Or perhaps there is an injury to someone already in the squad that we don't know about and he wants to see how they are feeling tomorrow.

He'll have to make a decision tomorrow anyway, as that is when the draws are made.

Ties like this in the last 25 years

Here are some (hastily produced and quite probably error-filled) stats on previous ties where we didn't have a top 100 singles player - the full record (unless I've missed some last 1980s ties like this) can be seen at http://www.britishtennis.net/stats/dcnot100.htm but I'll paste the main points in here.

(N.B. "ties like this" means in the last 25 years with no top 100 singles player in the GB team)

Andrew Richardson (v Zimbabwe in 1997) was the last low-ranked Brit to win a live singles rubber v Byron Black WR 46. Strangely, he then lost to Byron's lower-ranked brother Wayne (WR 271) later in the tie, which we lost 4-1.

GB have not won a tie like this in the last 17 years, and not in the last 25 years without Jeremy Bates in the team. They have a W 3 L 8 record in ties like this in the last 25 years, but a W 3 L 3 record in ties like this outside the WG or WG QR/POs.

In all three wins, Jeremy Bates (who was in the top 100 at various other times) was playing and both singles players won at least one live rubber. However, in two of those cases, GBR had the highest ranked of the singles players and at least one opponent was ranked outside the top 500.

Only in Helsinki on carpet in 1989 did we win a tie like this with neither Brit in the top 150 and at least one opponent in the top 150.

We have a 0-8 record in ties like this played south of 52 degrees N ... but get this (again, assuming I haven't missed any ties like this in my haste (*)), we have a 3-0 record in DC ties like this played north of Watford! (Nottingham, Helsinki & Warsaw) wink

(*) I'll check it again later today

BBC
.......................Josh Goodall will spearhead Britain's bid for Davis Cup victory against Ukraine after being drawn to play Ilya Marchenko in the opening singles match.

Hampshire's Goodall, the highest-ranked player on the GB team at 192, will be expected to beat the world number 224.
Their match will be followed by Chris Eaton against Ukraine number one Sergiy Stakovsky in the Euro/Africa Zone Group One tie at Glasgow's Braehead Arena. Surrey's Eaton (ranked 383) faces a big task against the world number 125.
Saturday's doubles rubber sees Ross Hutchins and Colin Fleming team up against Stakovsky and Sergei Bubka.
And Sunday's singles matches will be the reverse of Friday's rubbers, with Goodall again first up against Stakovsky.
Captain John Lloyd confirmed his four-man line-up on Thursday, with James Ward the man to miss out from the five who travelled to Glasgow.
Britain's world number four Andy Murray, the main draw for Scottish spectators, was ruled out of the tie after picking up a virus during the Dubai Open ...............
