Davis Cup Day 2 - Doubles

So Andy has a slight groin strain and so Ross and Jamie get to play a live Doubles rubber for the first time against Knowle / Melzer !

Ross & Jamie for Davis Cup Doubles

So with a reported slight groin strain for Andy it is up to Ross & Jamie to play the crucial doubles tie against Jurgen and Julian. Ross has only experienced losing for GBR in the Davis Cup and Jamie only has a W1/L1 record so the Austrians must go in as favourite.

So the possibility of the Boggo / Peya match being the deciding tie has just increased ten fold.

Hopefully Andy will be 100% (Which i think he is) and take care of Melzer on Sunday AM.

I dont think there is much wrong with Andy. Tactics involved in this. Also helps to cover Lloyds ass if GBR eventually lose this.

If it is tactical then I think it is a good move. We need to build up a DC doubles partnership which does not rely on Andy, and Ross/Jamie is the best bet. If Boggo/Peya prove to be live, then that could also be good, as there are unlikely to be better chances for him to gain a win in a live rubber in the World Group (given we would play a seeded and hence strong team), and he needs the confidence lift of a win here to have any chance at that level.

Anybody else finding the commentator's "English win or Scottish loss" attitude extremely annoying?

I guess you must be Scottish Angy1, because I (English) was feeling the reverse - when Ross misses out it is due to his inexperience or bad positioned but when Jamie missed out it was unfortunate or unlucky.

The Austrians said they found it much easier than expected and both surprised that Andy didnt play!

Poor old Alex - keep taking the pills - it could all rest on you!

This is set up perfectly for a rousing winning choris of Boggo's coming home at about 4pm tomorrow.

Jamie Murray is so overhyped it's funny. Carried by his brother, Eric Butorac, Jelena Jankovic, Liezel Huber and Max Mirnyi for the last two years - he really isn't much of a tennis player.

Hutchins looked encouraging to me.

That result wasn't a surprise - it was the equivalent of Chelsea vs Brentford, and Chelsea won 6-0.

Anyone who expected anything different form the doubles is/was deluded.

Not just outclassed but Jamie should have a could have played so much better....he netted so many forehands and did not play well at all. He seems a shadow of himself...not played well with Max this year and that form he brought to the DC. Ross played okay but got broken 4 times to Jamies 3 times.

A DC dubs match should last longer than 1hr 42 !

In doubles, I think which of the pair got broken most does not say nearly as much as in singles. One man can serve well but be let down by his partner missing sitters at the net - which, I'm sorry to say, I saw Jamie doing several times today.
I don't see much doubles as TV so rarely shows it, but frankly looking at the pair of them it was pretty hard to say which of the two was the higher ranked. If the commentators were English-biased, which I (admittedly English) did not notice, then actually I think it was because more was expected of the much more experienced Jamie, and he didn't produce.

Johnnylad I think you missed out Coetzee,Ullyett and probably others I've forgotten.

P.S Booty has as the majority predicted flourished all the way to 68 since escaping from Jamie.

Edited to point out that I'm not suggesting for a moment that Jamie played well today, I just think the popular notion that so many different people have carried him is absurd.Look at Jankovic and Butorac's relative successes at doubles without him.

Plus Huber's jocular threat to Bondarenko ,to keep away from him he's hers ,suggests the Women's no.1 rates him.
