As feared Meng Yuan didn't do us any favours, so Mel's good fortune was down to the injury-prone Jamea Jackson. Mel plays at 3am and has a reasonable draw. Lucie Safarova is a talented and powerful player, but erratic - like a left-handed Sania Mirza. Mel usually prefers playing against players like this who give her pace and short rallies, rather than the more consistent ones.
Mel struggled in US Open qualifying with an ankle injury, which she has yet to fully recover from, and added to her woes by straining her left thigh here. As a result she has pulled out of her next tournament (Tokyo qualifying) and is flying to Australia to recuperate, before playing a series of 25Ks down under (joining the quartet who played this month and have stayed on).
