Go take a look at Jennifer Capriati's first 3 events. Entered the rankings at 25 in the world, having beaten 11 top 100 players including 5 victories over top 20 players. Her best win while unranked: Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario then ranked 5 in the world, score 6-1 6-1. All this while aged 14. At the end of that year she was number 8 in the world (aged 14).
Laura Robson (GBR) beat (4) Tzipi Obziler (ISR) 6-3, 6-3
After seeing Laura play on Wednesday, I thought to myself, 'definately will be top 100, should be top 50, could be top 10.' After seeing her today I will change that to 'definately will be top 50, should be top 10, could be no.1'. She played some seriously good tennis today. Seriously. Her backhand is like a dream. Her forehand is extremley useful. Her serving is effortless. And on her returns she takes the ball so early she immediately forces her opponent on the backfoot. And that is not to mention her incredible composure and lack of stage fright. Today she must have hit between 20-30 winners. She only had to save two break points, both in the first game of the second set. The veteran Oblizer didn't show much of her experience, continually hitting to Laura's backhand, her strength, and continually getting punished.
Fantastic stuff from Laura, and this is a great start to her senior career, and beating this level of opponent is very encouraging.
The reports of her performance sound good as well, and if she can keep playing at this level, then she could well be top 100 or so within a year which would be a fabolous achievement, but we better just hope the media don't get her on back when she does suffer a couple of surprising losses.
Good luck to her this weekend, and hopefully she can take the title.
wolf wrote:Now a note on the organising of this event. Firstly, I have to praise the organisers for having the intiative to have an evening session, it clearly drew the crowds in. But now for the criticism. It is £6 to get in for each of today, Saturday and Sunday. Now I don't mind that, but to pay that I want to see as much tennis as possible. I don't want to see a sign saying 'officials and guests only' suddenly appear on a door today, which was put there to prevent people from going on the balcony above the courts, meaning I couldn't watch Court 4 (legally). Now I went in anyway, sod the rules and all that, but a more withdrawn person than myself, or someone who hadn't already come this week wouldn't have done the same as me. And also if you look at the OOP of play for tommorow, you will see that both semis are running at the same time (noon). That is a total JOKE. They clearly think everyone wants to just come in and see Laura. Obviously they are attracting publicicty just because of Laura's exploits, but that doesn't mean that this is now the Laura Robson tournament. There are people like myself who just want to come and watch some tennis, and Laura being there has just been an added bonus. I would have love to have seen the whole of the other semi, but as it is it looks like I am driving all the to Shrewsbury just to see one match, and maybe the end of a second if the first one finishes before the other.
Thanks for the excellent set of reports. I agree entirely with your criticism of the oop. I have no problem with the charge, but having done so they should have ensured there were 2 consecutive matches to watch. Surely the officials aren't that desperate to go to Shrewsbury v Bradford!?
