Anne Keothavong returns to action following her successful US Open in this Tier 1 tournament. In previous years Anne would have expected to have been in a moderate standard qualifying tournament, as the timing immediately after the Australian Open did not attract many top players.
The change of schedule has strengthened the event with the qualifying draw, out around Friday lunchtime, also featuring Mel South who is in Asia for 3 weeks of Tour qualifying.
(1)Katarina Srebotnik (SLO) v I-Hsuan Hwang (TPE) Rika Fujiwara (JPN) v Akiko Yonemura (JPN) Greta Arn (HUN) v (wc)Kurumi Nara (JPN) (7)Anne Keothavong (GBR) v Erika Takao (JPN)
(4)Aleksandra Wozniak (CAN) v Melanie South (GBR) Vania King (USA) v Shiho Hisamatsu (JPN) Su-Wei Hsieh (TPE) v (wc)Kimiko Date-Krumm (JPN) (5)Casey Dellacqua (AUS) v Audra Cohen (USA)
Anne first on Center tommorow, Mel 2nd on Court 4. 3:00am BST start, you'll have to be a real diehard to stay up for this one!
Couple of wins there for Anne surely on current form and that would net her 15 points. If she got past Srebotnik as well then that would be super. A real chance here for her to get into the main draw. Mels section is definately harder. Not sure about her prospects really.
Anne's opener should be comfortable, her second round winnable (though she is tied 1-1 with Greta Arn, both matches being in the last year or so), but she is unlucky to be in the same section as the in-form Srebotnik.
Mel is also unlucky in having to face a top 50 player in the first qualifying round - indeed one who won the Tier 2 event in Stanford. Good experience though.
Greta Arn has reached a couple of Tour semis this year, but hasn't done anything much recently, so Anne will start as favourite, though not an overwhelming one. Their previous meetings were:
2007 Canadian Open Hard (O) G.ARN 6-3 6-0 2008 Fed Cup 2008 Carpet (I) A.KEOTHAVONG 7-6(5) 7-5
Their match is on second tomorrow, so about 4am probably
This match is definatly winnable. Srebotnik may be the overwhelming favourite but if Anna plays well she could pull it off. Although she had a great USO, Srebotnik isn't the most consistent of players in terms of her form so if she comes out here and doesn't play well, Anne has a really good chance. Cmon Anne!

Anne is first match on centre court tomorrow (2am BST). If she pulls off an upset against Srebotnik a tough first round draw awaits - Cornet, Wozniacki, Chakvetadze or Petrova. Lose and there is little chance of an LL as she will not be top of the list (the 3rd and 6th seeds play each other). Also into final qualifying is veteran Kimiko Date-Krumm, who continued her excellent form since making a comeback 12 years after retirement, by knocking out top 50 player Casey Dellacqua.
